BUTNER, NC - State Department of Health and Human Services workers at Central Regional Hospital will be rallying and speaking out tomorrow, Thursday, June 5 in Butner, NC, to a group of local and state NAACP leaders, local clergy, union members and state elected officials about a series of long-standing concerns that have injured many workers and created high turn-over rates. 

 

"My wife and I both sleep most nights every week in a recreational vehicle truck parked near the hospital because we are forced to work so much overtime, including several days of consecutive 16-hour shifts. We can not get proper sleep if we take time to drive home. We are committed to safety, quality care and adequate rest, and our only option is to sleep in this RV", stated Joseph Sterling, healthcare technician and UE150 member.  

 

Nearly twenty workers filed a group complaint, organized by UE local 150, N.C. Public Service Workers Union, on May 7 with the state Occupational Safety and Health Administration seeking redress for injuries that resulted from understaffing, severe forced overtime, lack of proper training and input to safety policies. The union workers have a drafted a list of solutions - which was delivered to D.H.H.S. Secretary Aldona Wos and C.R.H. Director Mike Hennike in March - and yet they have not seen any response or action taken. 

 

"State workers and union supporters are part of the Forward Together Moral Movement. We stand together," stated Rev. William Barber II, President of the NC NAACP. "Our greatest moral values remind us that, according to Deuteronomy 24:14: 'You shall not oppress a hired servant who is poor and needy, whether he is one of your brothers or one of the sojourners who are in your land within your towns. You shall give him his wages on the same day, before the sun sets (for he is poor and counts on it), lest he cry against you to the Lord, and you be guilty of sin.'"

 

The civil rights, clergy, union and elected officials plan to gather testimony from workers and meet with Director Mike Hennike to address the issues that plague many of the D.H.H.S. facilities across the state. 

 

Representative Verla Insko, Representative Nathan Baskerville and Senator Floyd McKissick all plan to attend the event. Reverend Curtis Gatewood, N.C. N.A.A.C.P. Historic Thousands on Jones Street (HKonJ) Coalition Coordinator, Timothy Daye, President of Vance County N.A.A.C.P., and members of the Granville County N.A.A.C.P. all plan to attend the event, along with Reverend Jimmie Hawkins, Covenant Presbyterian Church in Durham, and Pastor Trice from Union Chapel Baptist Church in Butner. 

 

The press is invited to interview workers and civil rights, clergy and elected officials that are participating in this event.

#NCGA. They locked the doors to keep #MoralMondays folks out

They locked the doors of the General Assembly building yesterday to try and keep the Forward Together Moral Movement from petitioning our lawmakers and calling upon them to repent, repeal these devastating policies and to restore our faith in their government. 

 

  

 

Our eleven moral witnesses would not be moved from petitioning Gov. Pat McCrory yesterday to work for the repeal of these bad laws. As long as our lawmakers continue to pursue policies that hurt North Carolina's most vulnerable, we shall not be moved. We are fighting extremism in the courts, in the streets, in the legislative halls, in the newspapers and on social media and at the ballot box.

Last summer, the extremists in our General Assembly attacked our teachers and public schools by drastically cutting funding and sending millions instead to unaccountable private schools through an unconstitutional voucher program. 

 

This summer, they are contemplating even further cuts to our public education system: eliminating teaching assistants in many classrooms, including all second and third grade classes; scuttling vital working protections for teachers; refusing to provide adequate funding for textbooks and school buses; cutting money for school nurses; and denying the reinstatement of the popular Teaching Fellows program, which attracted some of the state's brightest college students into teaching. 

 

Enough is enough. We will stand up at Moral Monday on Monday, June 9 to support our teachers, our parents and children, and all who work in and love our public schools! 

 

During the Moral Monday rally, the Forward Together Moral Movement will make a special voter registration commitment for the summer.

Medicaid Expansion Lobby Day Draws Crowd of Politically Diverse Advocates

 

More than 25,000 petition signatures will be delivered to Speaker Tillis today as advocates from both sides of the aisle call for Medicaid expansion

RALEIGH- Hundreds of advocates for Medicaid expansion from across the state and representing both political parties will gather in Raleigh roday, June 4 for Medicaid Expansion Lobby Day. A news conference will be held at 10:30 am on the lawn in front of the Legislative Building (16 West Jones St.)

 

Advocates will be joined by diverse speakers including Republican Mayor Adam O'Neal of Belhaven, NC and Rev. William Barber II, president of the North Carolina NAACP and architect of the Forward Together Moral Monday Movement.

 

"These are life-and-death issues," Dr. Barber said. "If extremists in our General Assembly have their way and deny North Carolina the federal funds to expand Medicaid, people will die. Studies have shown that 2,800 lives will be lost each year in our state if we do not expand Medicaid. As people of conscience, we will not be moved from our purpose - calling upon them and Gov. McCrory to repeal these disastrous policies that are hurting the very people God loves - the sick, the poor, the women and children, the elderly, the least of these."

 

Legislative speakers will highlight bills introduced in the short session that would expand Medicaid in North Carolina and will include Democratic Minority Leader Larry Hall (Durham) and Senator Gladys Robinson (Guilford). They will be joined by individuals impacted by state leaders' refusal to expand Medicaid.

 

Following the news conference, boxes of more than 25,000 petition signatures collected by Medicaid Expansion Lobby Day organizing groups will be delivered to Speaker Thom Tillis's office.

 

The new 2014 legislation (HB 1083 and SB 730) would reverse the Legislature's 2013 decision to refuse to accept federal funds designated by the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to provide coverage to low-income working families. The decision has threatened critical medical providers particularly in rural parts of the state and impacted approximately 500,000 North Carolinians.
