ORANGE COUNTY, NC (February 6, 2015)—The Orange County Department of Social Services (DSS) encourages members of the community to print their resume, dress for success and prepare to make a positive impression with more than 30 potential employers planning to participate in an upcoming Job and Resource Fair.

 

The event will take place from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25, at the Department of Social Services located at 113 Mayo Street in Hillsborough.

 

This event is an excellent opportunity for employers to meet potential employees with a variety of skill sets, from experienced professionals to talented entry level individuals. Orange County’s goal is to provide a Job Fair where each employer leaves with several possible candidates for hire.

 

The Job and Resource Fair will be open to the public and door prizes will be awarded. Please visit www.ncworks.gov for assistance with resume building, interview tips and a host of other useful job search topics.

 

This marks the fourth community Job Fair sponsored by DSS.  During the September 2014 event, more than 50 employers served 300 residents who were seeking employment opportunities.  Several people were employed as a result of the job fair experience.

 

Employers who are interested in participating in the Job Fair need to reserve their space now. Booth space, parking, private offices to conduct interviews, Internet access, and lunch will be provided at no charge. Applicants will have access to a computer lab to complete online applications. A federal tax incentives seminar will be hosted for hiring managers from 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. and will include a continental breakfast.

The Board will consider conducting a public hearing to receive public comments prior to official close-out of the County’s FY 2010 Community Development (CDBG) Scattered Site Housing Rehabilitation Program, and then close the public hearing.

b. CDBG Program – Economic Recovery Program

The Board will consider conducting a public hearing to receive public comments prior to official close-out of the County’s FY 2010 Community Development (CDBG) Economic Recovery Program, and then close the public hearing.

7.  Regular Agenda

a.  Updated Orange County Partnership to End Homelessness Memorandum of Understanding

The Board will consider adopting the updated Orange County Partnership to End Homelessness Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Orange County and the Towns of Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Hillsborough and authorize Chair to sign the same.

b.  Recommended Uses of General Fund Unassigned Fund Balance as of June 30, 2014

The Board will consider a recommendation for the use of the General Fund unassigned Fund Balance in excess of the BOCC’s fund balance policy of $1.5 million of the excess fund balance to continue the funding of the Other Post Employment Benefits (OPEB) Fund; $450,000 to replenish the Social Justice Fund or for FY2014-15 appropriations as needed; and the remaining balance of $1.1 million available unassigned balance be used to balance the FY2015-16 budget; and provide direction and feedback to staff on the other potential uses of unassigned (available) fund balance.

ORANGE COUNTY, NC (May 19, 2014)— The Orange County Board of Commissioners announces the selection of Bonnie Hammersley as the next Orange County Manager starting June 25, 2014.

As County Manager, Hammersley will lead the day-to-day operations of Orange County Government, interacting with the Board of County Commissioners, county departments and the general public. She will report directly to the Board of Commissioners.

Hammersley has served for 26 years in county government, including most recently as County Administrator for Muskegon County, Michigan. She was the first female to lead Muskegon County starting in 2009. Prior to that, she spent 21 years working with Dane County, Wisconsin.

Her educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin.

Barry Jacobs, Chair of the Orange County Board of Commissioners, commented on the pending arrival of the new manager. “We’re very pleased Bonnie Hammersley is coming to Orange County as our new manager. Ms. Hammersley possesses impressive experience, has worked in a progressive community, and brings a striking combination of competence, confidence, and thoroughness. She is a good listener and by all accounts a hard worker and an adept practitioner of the collaborative skills we value,” Jacobs said.

Over 50 applicants from 15 states expressed interest in the position.

Hammersley is looking forward to being part of Orange County. “Orange County offers a wonderful quality of life, political stability and the community aggressively addresses the issues in a progressive and proactive manner. This is a great professional opportunity,” Hammersley said.

Michael Talbert is currently serving as Interim County Manager until his retirement on June 30, 2014.

The official vote on the appointment of the County Manager will occur at the Orange County Board of Commissioners’ Budget Public Hearing on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at the Department of Social Services, Hillsborough Commons, 113 Mayo St., Hillsborough, starting at 7:00 p.m.

Orange County will host a “meet and greet” on Friday, May 23, 2014 to offer the public an opportunity to meet Hammersley. The event will be held at the Link Government Services Center, 200 South Cameron Street in Hillsborough, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

ORANGE COUNTY COOPERATIVE EXTENSION INVITES PUBLIC

TO ESTATE PLANNING WORKSHOPS

ORANGE COUNTY, NC (May 16, 2014)—Orange County Cooperative Extension and the Orange County Department on Aging invite the public to take advantage of free estate planning workshops being conducted by two local attorneys. The registration deadline is on Wednesday, June 4.

When a North Carolina resident dies without a will, the state determines how their property will be distributed.  Parents of minor children should have a plan in place for their child’s care if something happens to them. 

The two-part series of workshops on Estate Planning will address these topics and the following issues:

ORANGE COUNTY, NC (May 16, 2014)— One major way citizens can have a positive impact on the future of Orange County is to volunteer to serve on the various advisory boards and commissions. Volunteers appointed by the Board of County Commissioners have an opportunity to influence the way of life in Orange County.

The Board of County Commissioners appoints a representative to fill one position on the CHAPEL HILL BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT. This individual represents and must reside in the Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) and/or the Joint Planning Area (JPA) of Chapel Hill.

The Board of Adjustment, through the process of appeal and review may determine that variances to the zoning regulations of the Town be permitted. It may also reverse any order, requirement, decision, or determination of the administrative official charged with enforcement of the Land Use Management Ordinance. It may serve as an appeals board for other matters assigned to it under the Town Code of Ordinances. The Board of Adjustment has been granted the power to act independently of the Town Council in most instances but on occasion serves in an advisory capacity to the Council.

The position will be open for appointment after June.

The Chapel Hill Planning Board develops a comprehensive plan for the orderly growth and development of Chapel Hill. It reviews all plans for buildings, projects and facilities to be located within the Town’s jurisdiction. It also formulates and recommends the adoption and amendment of ordinances.
