Sixty years after the Supreme Court ruled that segregated schools could never be equal and set a mandate for the South to provide quality education for all children, regardless of color, extremists in our General Assembly are pursuing policies that will resegregate and hobble our public schools.

Last summer, the extremists in our General Assembly attacked our teachers and public schools by drastically cutting funding and sending millions instead to unaccountable private schools through an unconstitutional voucher program.
This summer, they are contemplating even further cuts to our public education system: eliminating teaching assistants in many classrooms, including all second and third grade classes; scuttling vital working protections for teachers; refusing to provide adequate funding for textbooks and school buses; cutting money for school nurses; and denying the reinstatement of the popular Teaching Fellows program, which attracted some of the state's brightest college students into teaching.
We will stand up at Moral Monday on Monday, June 9 to support our teachers, our parents and children, and all who work in and love our public schools!
During the Moral Monday rally, the Forward Together Moral Movement will make a special voter registration commitment for the summer.

The North Carolina NAACP and the Forward Together Movement Compliment Gov. Pat McCrory on Opposing Full Repeal of Common Core Standards and Encourage Him to Stand with Educators in Supporting This Curriculum
RALEIGH - The Common Core standards - a national program that aims to provide an in-depth, challenging curricula for math and language arts skills - are on the brink of being voted out of North Carolina's public schools, a move that is contrary to what educators, the business community and many parents believe is best for our kids.
Senate Leader Phil Berger and the NC Senate voted Thursday to create a commission to review the Common Core standards for possible changes. The 33-15 vote came a day after the NC House, led by Speaker Thom Tillis, voted to repeal the standards entirely. Now the state legislature will have to find a way to meld the two bills.
Gov. Pat McCrory, in a rare but applauded move, broke with the extremists in his party to voice support for the Common Core standards, although he did recognize that they would need some revision to be made more effective.

"McCrory on Thursday said anything that weakens the current standards is 'not a smart move.'
"'There are things we need to correct and recognize,' he said, citing concerns with implementation and testing in remarks at a Raleigh meeting of the N.C. Business Committee for Education, a group that supports the standards. 'But again, you don't just throw out the whole thing if you have some minor issues you need to fix.'"
The North Carolina NAACP and the Forward Together Moral Movement commend Gov. McCrory for his support of the Common Core standards over and against the extremists in his party that would look to turn back the clock on our schools.
Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, president of the North Carolina NAACP, made the following statement in regard to the Senate and House votes on Common Core as well as Gov. McCrory's response:
"We applaud Gov. McCrory for his stand in support of Common Core standards in public education. It makes sense to focus on math and language arts through problem-solving and critical thinking. Common Core's emphasis on fundamental mathematical concepts applied in real-life situations makes sense. Its language arts focus on nonfiction and on literacy in history, science and social studies promises a more rigorous basic education. To move from an emphasis on rote memorization toward conceptual understanding is to create a stronger platform for lifelong learning, not just the next test. It is not surprising that both business and educational leaders support Common Core.
"Our purpose here, however, is not to praise what undoubtedly is a worthy but imperfect new educational approach but to express our support for Gov. McCrory's brave and independent decision to defend Common Core even in the face of opposition from much of his party. We encourage him to go on to support repeal of the huge education cuts that he has supported in the past, cuts that chop the core and heart out of our public school programs. We will stand with him as far as he goes to ensure the rights of all students under the North Carolina Constitution to a sound basic education."

Dear Wayne County Supporters, Sorry for the short notice, but there will be an important meeting of the Wayne County Board of Elections on Tuesday, June 10, at 9:00 AM at the Board of Elections office located at 209 S. William St. in Goldsboro. We need you there! The 3-member board (2 Republicans, 1 Democrat) will be discussing Wayne County's early voting plan for the November election. The public can attend the meeting and provide input about potential locations for early voting sites, evening and weekend voting hours, and more. If you can attend the meeting or can help advocate for a good early voting plan, please contact Sylvia Barnes, President, Wayne County NAACP at 919-273-3632 or email:sbshebarnes@gmail.com. From October 23 to November 1, 2014, Wayne County is required by law to open enough voting sites and hours to total up to at least 337 hours of early voting (based on what it provided in 2010). The only way the county can provide less time is to get a "waiver" from the State Board of Elections which requires a unanimous vote by every member of both the county and state elections boards. Democracy North Carolina encourages local advocates to push for strong early voting plans, including hours on both Saturdays at all the early voting locations and possibly on Sunday, too, if you have support of a board member. RALEIGH - The North Carolina NAACP and the Forward Together Moral Movement have not yet had any response to a letter that Belhaven Mayor Adam O'Neal, a Republican, and Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, president of the North Carolina NAACP, wrote to Gov. Pat McCrory asking to sit down for serious discussion about how to save struggling rural hospitals in this state.
The letter, included HERE, was hand delivered to the Governor's office on May 21, 2014. Another copy arrived by classified mail on May 22, 2014.
Mayor O'Neal and Dr. Barber spoke together yesterday at Medicaid Lobby Day about this extremist General Assembly's continued denial of the Medicaid expansion.
"Dr. Barber and I don't agree on everything - most things," Mayor O'Neal said. "But we agree this is a moral issue. You can't let hospitals close and people die to prove a political point. Without the Medicaid expansion, rural hospitals like the one in my hometown are on the brink of closing. People will die."
Earlier this week at Moral Monday on June 2, the North Carolina NAACP and the Forward Together Moral Movement attempted to deliver a letter to our lawmakers asking them to do the right thing and repeal these policies that are hurting hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians. But the doors to the People's House were locked.
The People would not be kept from their petition. People from all across the state wedged their petitions into the door jams and stuffed them under the doors themselves.
At the state capitol, 11 moral witnesses remained in the building with their letters to Gov. McCrory, determined to make their voices heard on these matters of life and death importance. Shortly after 7 pm on Monday evening, the state capitol police arrested them and escorted them out of the building in handcuffs.
We have not had any response to our letters to either the state lawmakers or Gov. McCrory.
