Rocky Mount Pflag to host meeting
Join Pflag for their regularly schedule monthly meeting at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 516 N Church St.
Tonight meeting will feature two special guests,
Jaide D and Jen Jones.
Jaide was a contestant in Martin Luther King Jr Oratorical Contest and spoke on LGBT Rights.
Jen, Pflag longtime friend from Equality NC,will give an update on what’s happening in NC to Advance equality.

Staged Reading of “Out in Left Field”
The Nash County Art Council will host a Staged reading of Out in the left field, by Marilynn Anselmi on Saturday March 29, at 7 pm. A suggested donations of $5 dollars goes to fund scholarships for the area youth. The public is invited to this event. So come on out and bring the family..

Rocky Mount P-Flag to Meet this Tuesday the 18th.
The Local Chapter of P-Flag will hold it monthly meeting this Tuesday the 18 at 6 pm. The Meeting will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship building located at 516 N Church St.
The meeting will have a guest speaker from Equality NC, yes their communications Director Jen Jones. So if you have nothing to do this Tuesday come on down to hear her speak.

Race to the Ballots comes to Rocky Mount

Tonight a few small groups united for the same cause, to fight against the upcoming “Amendment 1” ballot initiative. The meet up was hosted by Rocky Mount’s local chapter of Pflag and UU Church.
It began with a social time while waiting for Jen and her entourage to arrive. The meeting started with the usual Pflag agenda and introductions. They briefly touched on their group business and afterward an invitation to attend their first major fund-raiser (the not the official name) called “Jimmy Creech event,” then the first guest speaker took the podium.
Jake Gellar-Goad, from Democracy NC had come from Durham to share his’ group upcoming events, and to show his support of Equality NC and his opposition to Amendment 1. Short and very to the point he turned the podium over the Jen Jones of ENC and Race to the Ballot runner.
She is putting a face to the NC equality movement. She has drive and ambition that is unequaled. She is risking permanent knee damage—for her cause.
Jen began with definition of the defense of Marriage Act and how that same definition not only affects us but would affect others in future battles with NC Legislative. She already anticipates some of the pitfalls ahead if the Amendment passes. But like she says “if I can get my mother to understand and vote no on this Amendment—then any of us should be able to talk others about it. If you leave this place and talk to ten people—by the time May 8th comes around—voters will understand what this Amendment is really about and vote against it or if nothing else ,not vote for it.”
There was some Q&A; one lady asking if would be beneficial to seek a Resolution Opposing the Amendment from the Rocky Mount City Council. Another person ask, “if we did vote down this amendment and got the marriage law over turn, could the Legislature bring up another type of Amendment to block Same-sex Marriage again? She reply “that they, but doubt if they would have resources to get it past.”

As you know, no voice is more powerful -- or persuasive -- than that of a PFLAG member. As parents, families, friends and allies of America's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) citizens, we know firsthand the impact that discriminatory laws have on our loved ones and ourselves. Our stories of the pain this prejudice inflicts upon our families are enormously important in moving fair legislation forward and in opposing anti-LGBT bills and resolutions in Congress.
For almost a decade, PFLAG National’s Bringing the Message Home campaign has empowered many of you to meet with countless lawmakers and their staff, helping pass important laws like the Shepard Byrd Hate Crimes Prevention Act and the legislative repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Now, with the release of our 2011 guide, we have included the most recent federal legislation introduced in the 112th Congress. Bringing the Message Home will empower and encourage you to begin or continue meeting with federal lawmakers about important issues impacting our LGBT loved ones. It features issue briefs, talking points, information to help you set up a lobby visit, and techniques for gaining the support of your Congress Members.
While the current House of Representatives poses a significant obstacle for pro-LGBT legislation to advance, we view this Congress as an important opportunity to continue education efforts vital to the ultimate passage of legislation like the Safe Schools Improvement Act, the Every Child Deserves a Family Act and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, among the many other critical bills necessary to extend full equality to our LGBT loved ones and ourselves. In fact, there are over 100 new members of Congress who need education about LGBT lives and the lack of basic civil rights.
It is critically important that PFLAG families let lawmakers and the President know where they stand on important legislative and administrative priorities.
Remember: it is up to each of us, as members of the PFLAG family, to bring the message home thatdiscrimination, prejudice and second-class citizenship must end, and that full civil rights must be extended to our family and friends without delay. To that end please take action today by downloading your copy of Bringing the Message Home . Research the issues, then schedule a lobby visit with your legislators. Over the next few months, you'll have two opportunities to meet with your federal legislators; once in August when they return to their home states, and in D.C. when you join us at the PFLAG National Lobby Day, part of the 2011 PFLAG National Convention, on November 3rd! Please don't pass up these opportunities to let key decision-makers know how they can help make your families stronger by moving equality forward!
