GetEQUAL Statement on Passing of Fred Phelps, Sr.

WASHINGTON, DC — Early this morning, Fred Phelps Sr., founder of Westboro Baptist Church, died in hospice care. GetEQUAL — a national social justice organization working toward the full equality of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) Americans — issued the following statement in response to this news:

Fred Phelps Sr. passed away this morning, and we lift up his humanity especially as we know that his family is grieving his loss. Mr. Phelps caused very real pain and trauma for thousands of Americans, especially for those in the LGBTQ community but also for the families of fallen service members. It is our hope that those hurt by his words and actions will find healing. It is our hope that his family will one day find space in their hearts to recognize the humanity of LGBTQ individuals. And it is our hope that people across the United States commit or re-commit themselves to working toward equality and justice for all as a lasting legacy of Mr. Phelps’ life.

There will always be those who are so in pain themselves that they feel compelled to inflict pain on others. We re-commit ourselves today to loving those who hate us. We re-commit ourselves today to seeing the humanity in those who cannot or will not see it in us. And we re-commit ourselves today to working toward an America that is free of that pain — an America in which LGBTQ folks can live and love openly. On this day, we stand with our LGBTQ sisters and brothers across the country to say, with certainty, that we see that day over the horizon and that we will work until our hands bleed to bring about that day with a deep and abiding urgency.

The Nuts of Westboro Baptist Church will be Protest the Inauguration,

The Huffington Post confirmed with the National Park Service that the Westboro Baptist Church has secured a permit to picket along Pennsylvania Avenue at the north sidewalk, southeast corner of John Marshall Park, from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 21. In the past, the Westboro Baptist Church -- known for its vehement anti-gay positions -- has made empty threats. The group threatened to protest the funerals of Reddit co-founder and programmer Aaron Swartz as well as the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, but did not show up to either. The group also did not appear at the funerals for the victims of the Aurora, Colo., and Tucson, Ariz., shootings. Westboro Baptist Church has, however, followed through with protesting Obama before.

Court strikes down Nebraska's funeral picketing ban

OMAHA -- A federal appeals court struck down a Nebraska law on Thursday that keeps protesters several hundred feet away from a funeral or memorial service.

A three-judge panel of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a ruling by a lower federal court against members of Westboro Baptist Church, relying on its 2008 ruling in a Missouri case that said peaceful protests near funerals are protected by the First Amendment's right to free speech.

Thursday's opinion came in an appeal of a lawsuit filed by Shirley Phelps-Roper, the daughter of the founder of the Topeka, Kan.-based group that regularly protests at the funerals of fallen soldiers. Phelps-Roper had asked for a preliminary injunction to stop enforcement of the law, saying it was unconstitutional.

A shooting at a Seal Beach, California hair salon has claimed the lives of eight victims and critically injured one more. When the Seal Beach police first arrived on the scene, six were confirmed dead at the scene. Three people were transported to Long Beach Memorial Hospital, but two of them died of their wounds.

In a press conference, Sgt. Steve Bowles of the Seal Beach Police Department confirmed that a suspect was taken into police custody less than half a mile away from Salon Meritage, the scene of the crime. The suspect is described as a white male and was cooperative when police detained him, although Bowles could not confirm his name or residence. Local television feeds showed police putting a man in a police car, shirt open in the front and a calm look on his face.

FBI gets training from the WBC, WTF???

(Washington) The FBI said Wednesday that members of an anti-gay fundamentalist group participated in the bureau’s training of police officers and FBI agents – a move the bureau says it will take steps to remedy in the future.

The bureau extended the invitations to Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., for training this spring at two bureau facilities in Virginia: Quantico and Manassas.

Is WBC wimping out of their protests

Fred Phelps's Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) totally wimped out on the big picket they had planned during today's Seattle Pride Picnic.  WBC are the "God Hates Fags" people.  This is what they said on their picket schedule:

2nd Annual Pride Picnic in Seattle, WA ...WBC will picket the filthy fags and their enablers, not the least of which is their sponsors, Amazon, Microsoft, YMCA, FUZE, and Seattle Gay News.  No doubt you have all heard that God Hates Fags and Fag Enablers, and both are worthy of death (hell).

Even though WBC members managed to show up for their early morning pickets of Mars Hill Church and Christian Faith Center, several of them seemed to only be going through the motions.  Most notable was Fred Phelps's granddaughter Jael Phelps who rarely lifted her eyes from her phone or her feet from their roots in the sidewalk, leading me to wonder whether God Hates WBC Picket Slackers.  Photos of slacker Jael, plus more Seattle fabulousness and some closing words from two loving Christians, below the fold.

Now the WBC (Westboro Baptist Church) claims that they have done over 45,948 protests, that they have visit over 800 cities. If ones would look at their Picket Schedule, some time there are multi protest on someday and on other back to back protest in different states, where you have to wonder just how could they make them.

Where are they getting the money to travel all over the US, They have been banned from Canada, and England after one of their pickets.. I notice they talk a lot of crap about a few mid-east countries, but they won’t travel to countries, simply because they would never return home which would make the whole US very happy…

I have to wonder if the younger generation of the Phelps clan don’t really like these pickets. That they are force to do these pickets because Mommy and Daddy are forcing them.. If this family wasn’t a bunch of lawyers the state local family service dept. might have taken these kids away long ago. Family Service would claim this was some type of child abuse.

Side note almost the whole Phelps clan in on Twitter, and Google, as a result of the attack to their sites by anonymous a few months back their sites (all of them) were hack, however the clan claims they were updating codes. They didn’t what people to know Anonymous did take out their sites. While they turn to the free services of Google to host their protest fliers, twitter was used to spread their hateful speech to many..

First, the secretive, loosely organized collective of pranksters and hackers known as Anonymous said they would target the Westboro Baptist Church. Then the WBC said "Bring it." Then Anonymous was all, "jk lol."

But today, at least a few members of Anonymous were able to successfully bring down the WBC's site, and left a message behind. The site's down, but you can view the open letter to the WBC after the jump.
