“We’ve said all along North Carolina voters deserve to have their voices heard, and this important issue won’t ever be settled until a final decision is made by the U.S. Supreme Court,” said Senate Leader Phil Berger (R-Rockingham).  “Today’s petition is the most efficient and cost-effective way to reach a final resolution.”

“Regardless of where you stand on the ultimate issue, it is important to protect the will of the North Carolina voters who overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment,” said House Speaker-Designee Tim Moore (R-Cleveland).

Call upon State Lawmakers to Extend the June 30, 2014 Deadline for the Victims of the NC Sterilization Program to Apply for Compensation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 28, 2014

Contact: Sarah Bufkin, NC NAACP - smbufkin@gmail.com or 404.285.3413

The North Carolina NAACP and the Forward Together Moral Movement Call upon State Lawmakers to Extend the June 30, 2014 Deadline for  the Victims of  the NC Sterilization Program to Apply for Compensation

Two thirds of the victims have not filed claims for compensation because of  lack of state outreach about the  available compensation.

RALEIGH, NC - The North Carolina NAACP and the Forward Together Moral Movement call upon Senate Leader Phil Berger, House Speaker Thom Tillis, Gov. Pat McCrory and Budget Director Art Pope to extend the June 30 deadline for victims of the state's horrific sterilization program to apply for the $50,000 compensation set aside for each victim in 2013.

As of the middle of June, less than 600 of the estimated 1,800 victims have applied for their compensation. Close observers believe the state has failed to launch a broad outreach campaign to locate eligible North Carolinians, many of whom the state labelled as mentally defective as the reason for sterilizing them.

For almost a decade, the NC NAACP has demanded that the victims of the Winston-Salem based sterilization program that preyed on mainly poor African American women be compensated. In 2013, the General Assembly finally passed a bill that included a $10 million fund to provide restitution for the estimated 5,000 victims of the state's eugenics laws. Anyone who wishes to apply for compensation must submit a formal application byMonday, June 30.

Those familiar with the victims of the program were all concerned about how to reach people and how to help them fill out all the forms necessary to receive their compensation. There is no master list of victims. Many of the state's records are incomplete. Many of the victims lacked Social Security numbers in their early teens, when the majority were sterilized., and the addresses in the records are 40-50 years old. People have moved, married, changed their names. Many are poor and without ready access to legal advice. Some are functionally illiterate.

"These victims were targeted by the zealous eugenics program in the first place because they were marginalized, poor and without a voice, and now there has been little to no effort or resources from the state to locate these people and help them prepare their applications," said Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, president of the NC NAACP. "This state has a moral responsibility to find these men and women. Its responsibility did not end with setting aside money for victims to apply for. We call on our state lawmakers to extend this deadline by a year until June 30, 2015 and to commit additional energy and resources to an aggressive outreach campaign in the media and at the grassroots level. Let the state be as zealous locating the between two and four thousand victims and their heirs as it was when it tracked them down in their early teens, convinced the eugenics board they were defective people and then removed their reproductive organs. The extension will not significantly delay payments, since according to the present law no one receives payment until July 2015.

"The NC NAACP with our over 200 coalition partners addressed the issue of wrongful sterilization with the adoption of the coalition's 14-point agenda in 2007," Dr. Barber continued. "Since that time, obtaining compensation for the victims of the forcible sterilization program has been a mainstay of our agenda. Ten years have passed since the state offered a formal apology to victims of the involuntary sterilizations in 2001. These victims have suffered for years, in some cases enduring immense physical and psychological trauma. Compensation will not make these victims whole. But it is a sign that the State of North Carolina wishes to repair the injuries it caused some of her citizens."

Yes! NAACP Sues to over turn the #NCGA new house rules..

Raleigh, N.C. — The state chapter of the NAACP and other protesters are seeking to overturn rules that limit demonstrations at the Legislative Building.

The group filed suit Wednesday seeking a restraining order that would prevent the General Assembly Police from enforcing rules that prohibit groups from making enough noise to interfere with conversation and allow officers to order people to leave the building if they think those people pose an "imminent threat" of a disturbance.

How long before the first counterfeit is made??

New, high-tech $100 bill coming in October

NBC News: After a three-year hiatus, the US Federal Reserve says redesigned $100 bills will be ATMs and banks on October 8.

The new bill will have several features the Fed says will make life difficult for counterfeiters, but should help retailers identify fakes.

They include a blue, 3-D security ribbon embedded with images of bells that change to the number 100 when you tilt the note back and forth. If you tilt it side to side, those images move up and down.

WTF: Was Justice Served, HELL NO IT wasn’t it

TILLERY, N.C. — Does the punishment fit the crime? That is the underlying question in our legal system. The answer to that question has changed over time.

In 1970, a day laborer named Junior Allen was given a life sentence for a crime he would likely get probation for today.

Some in the legal community believe the case demonstrates a need to bring the past more in line with the present, when you consider that North Carolina's prison population is 30 percent over capacity, with no sign of letting up.

A jury convicted Allen of second-degree burglary for stealing a $140 television set from a home in Johnston County. Judge James Pou Bailey sent Allen to prison for life.

Reselling your stuff make become illegal thanks to the Federal Court and the Supreme Court

Read about the case here, click
Are you in?  More than 3,000 sites -- including prominent allies like the Electronic Frontier Foundation -- have signed up to take part in today's day of action. The Supreme Court is hearing that case that will decide if you have the right to resell the things you own.
Ebay, Craigslist, and even the old-fashioned garage sale are under threat.
Sites will be using our ribbons and ball-and-chain icons to sound the alarm about the Kirtsaeng vs John Wiley & Sons case:
The Supreme Court might side with Big Business and decide that you don't have the right to resell things that were made abroad: books, clothes, iPhones -- almost anything.
If you're planning to take part, please click here to grab the code for one of those icons, and post it on your site! (And maybe write up a blurb about why you're taking a stand.)
Here's what it'll look like:

We expect to have a legislative fight on our hands come winter, no matter how the Supreme Court rules.  So we want to drive thousands of emails to lawmakers before Big Business sics its brigade of lobbyists on them.
Whether or not you're posting on your site, will you spread word to your friends -- and especially anybody who you know who sells things online?

Palin hits the books, and come up with this racist tweet..

PalinRacist
I still have to wonder if it was Palin are some poor intern work for her sorry butt..

Over at her Facebook page, they are fast blocking those who don’t agree with statements..

Palin comments about recently release emails.

We now know that the State Department sent an email to the White House, the Pentagon, the FBI and others in the intelligence community about this Islamist group claiming responsibility. And yet for days afterwards the White House and State Department led everyone to believe that the attack was the result of a spontaneous protest over an obscure YouTube video that had been uploaded months prior. Anywhere from 300 to 400 people from the administration and our intelligence community would have seen that email. Why the lies? Why the cover up? Why the dissembling about the cause of the murder of our ambassador on the anniversary of the worst terrorist attacks on American soil? We deserve answers to this. President Obama’s shuck and jive shtick with these Benghazi lies must end.

this is from a commenter on this above story,

Palin is a Queen of "shuck and Jive"..She bailed out of her responsibility as a Governor..She is a Honky tonk Queen..

Ann Romney just a ‘corporate wife’

This is Shock, even for Fox News,

Fox News political analyst Juan Williams shocked his fellow panelists during Tuesday night’s Republican National Convention when he went off script and said that Ann Romney was just a “corporate wife” whose husband takes care of her.

then again this also piss them off too,

Earlier this year, similar comments made by Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen, that Ann Romney had “never worked a day in her life,” were met with outrage at Fox News.

Williams also had this to say,

“It looks like a woman whose husband takes care of her and she’s been very lucky and blessed in this life,” Williams observed. “She’s not speaking, I think, for the tremendous number of single women in this country or married women or separated — she did not convince me that, ‘You know what? I understand the struggles of American women in general.”

Which didn’t make Megyn Kelly happy at all.

Ann Romney didn’t even take care of her own kids, nannies and maids other people she paid did. Yet she knows she has it good, and she not going to rock her boat.

Here's what Rosen said, exactly, about Mitt's reliance on Ann's "expertise":

Guess what? His wife has actually never worked a day in her life. She's never really dealt with the kinds of economic issues that a majority of the women in this country are facing.

Rosen comments on twitter and Ann’s too,

Rosen tweeted, "I've nothing against @AnnRomney. I just don't want Mitt using her as an expert on women struggling $ to support their family. She isn't." And she also spoke at Ann directly, "@AnnDRomney Please know, I admire you. But your husband shouldn't say you are his expert on women and the economy." Ann, of course, did not reply,

So just how can Ann Romney who never work a job in her life be an expect on women who are struggling to support their families. Cause you know damn well she had hired help to deal with those boys..

Douchebagoftheday, AZ. Gov. Jan Brewer

Yes thanks to the Crept keeper’s wife, all women in AZ are now 2 week Pregnant before Conception,

Jan-Brewer2In Arizona, women are now legally pregnant two weeks before conception, according to a new law, the Orwellianly-named, “Women’s Health and Safety Act,” signed yesterday by Republican Governor Jan Brewer. The scientifically, medically, ethically, and intellectually dishonest legislation is designed to reduce the amount of time a woman is allowed to have a legal abortion, and is one of the most draconian bills to become law in America.

What the hell is the Cow smoking or taking.. is there something in the water there in AZ that make people become flat out stupid??

“Planned Parenthood of Arizona lobbyist Michelle Steinberg called the law the country’s ‘most extreme piece of anti-abortion legislation’.” the Tucson Citizen reported:

She said the law defines pregnancy in a way that bans abortion two weeks before the other seven states with similar laws, because it calculates gestational age starting with the first day of the last menstrual period rather than the date of conception.

Bristol P, on Obama Parenting

While Bristol is running around Alaska screwing every Tom, Dick and Harry, she has found the time to talk about Obama role as a father, and if he is doing a great job or not.

"While it’s great to listen to your kids’ ideas, there’s also a time when dads simply need to be dads. In this case, it would’ve been helpful for him to explain to Malia and Sasha that while her friends parents are no doubt lovely people, that’s not a reason to change thousands of years of thinking about marriage. Or that – as great as her friends may be – we know that in general kids do better growing up in a mother/father home. Ideally, fathers help shape their kids’ worldview." - Unwed teen mom Bristol Palin, lecturing the president on how to properly bring up his daughters.

So, just how many Kids does she how now, how many fathers???

Republican leaders planned today’s session in case they needed to deal with redistricting. With no redistricting problems in sight, they had no business to do and promptly adjourned.

And liberal-leaning groups, lead by Progress NC and Democracy North Carolina, brought more than 50 people to the General Assembly today to protest and keep and eye on the session. When they brought people into the building to stand outside the Speakers’ office, they were told to go elsewhere. Most of the group went up to the third floor to watch the very quick skeleton session.

It's worth noting that this group wasn't making any more noise than than average middle school group that traipses through the building on a fairly regular basis.

“Our group is too large,” Adam Sotak, organizing director for Democracy North Carolina told his group. This provoked much grumbling and questions about where rules for the legislative building came from.
