Honoring Senator Jesse Helms

This week, I was proud to submit H.R. 6607 - a bill to name the Century Post Office in Raleigh as the 'Jesse Helms Federal Building and United States Courthouse'. Senator Helms was an important advocate and representative of North Carolina throughout his 20 years of service in the United States Senate. This bill will ensure that the work he accomplished for the people of North Carolina will live on and invite future generations to learn about the important work he accomplished for our state.
Below is a statement from Mrs. Dorothy Helms, wife of the late Senator Jesse Helms:
"Today, the entire Helms family was deeply touched to learn that Rep. Renee Ellmers (R, N.C.) introduced a House Resolution which will name the historic Century Post Office in Raleigh as the 'Jesse Helms Federal Building and United States Courthouse'.  Jesse’s office was located in that very building for most of his Senate career. He was very proud to have his Senate office in that building on Fayetteville Street — Raleigh’s 'Main Street'.  Jesse was a letter writer throughout his entire life so it's especially meaningful that the building to be named in his honor contains a post office. We are most humbled by Congress’ consideration of this resolution."

This man was nothing more then a racist, bigot, homophobe, and a complete jack ass.

Ellmers, his work was to belittle and deny many people the basics items of life. Lets not forget how he treated those with HIV, no matter if they were str8 or Gay or how they become infected.

He actively opposed civil rights, voting rights, disability rights, women's rights and gay rights. He attacked children receiving food stamps, fought against a federal holiday to commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. and routinely engaged in political and editorial rhetoric that was divisive and rightly considered hate speech. Just one example: the time he called UNC-Chapel Hill the "University of Negroes and Communists."*

Ellmers wants to take up Congress time to rename a building after this asshole instead of focusing on our Current Financial issues and other very important items.. The Tea-Republicans really know how to waste time and money in Congress, yet they Blame Obama for everything.

Jesse had a Code word for Blacks,

According to the Wall Street Journal, Helms came up with a code word for blacks, In lieu of the N-word Helms called African Americans "Freds." Helms would ask his staffers, "What does that Fred want?" if a black constituent showed up at his Senate office and I recall hearing him use the the term "Fred" in more public forums. He did not and does not represent or symbolize the North Carolina I work every day to help recover from the Bush recession!

The Day After NC's Vote on Amendment 1 in Wilson NC

the Campaign For Southern Equality:

On May 8th, North Carolinians will decide on a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would ban marriage, civil unions and domestic partnerships for same-sex couples. Beginning the next morning, the WE DO Campaign will visit eight counties where more than forty LGBT couples will apply for marriage licenses in their local communities, with clergy, elected officials, family, and community members accompanying them in support. The couples will be denied licenses because they do not meet the legal requirements for marriage in North Carolina, which stipulate that partners must be of the opposite sex. In each community, the WE DO event will also include a Prayer Service for Reconciliation led by clergy. In select counties, couples and allies will conduct a sit-in at the Register of Deeds Office after the denials occur, as a peaceful act of civil disobedience.

did you know that National Coming Out Day is coming up next week, on Tuesday, October 11?

For a lot of people, the holiday has become just a time to change your Facebook profile picture. But the holiday can -- and should -- be about so much more.

National Coming Out Day is an opportunity each year to assess what you're doing for LGBT equality. It's a chance to challenge yourself -- and your friends -- to keep being visible and to keep showing courage in the fight for the equality we deserve.

This year, we want to help you in that process!

We try to only ever ask you to do one thing at a time, but we're asking you -- in the honor of NCOD -- to help us in three efforts to enhance the amazing momentum that's building toward equality and justice:

• Video/Photo: We're looking for videos and photos of folks who are coming out for equality. We will use your images to stitch together a video "statement" from the GetEQUAL community for next week. Take a picture/video of yourself holding hand-written signs in front of you, and email it to us at info@getequal.org. Here are the signs we're looking for:

- I'm "occupation" (doctor, teacher, cop, computer geek, retired, unemployed, Wal-Mart cashier, etc.)

- I live in "state"

- I like to "hobby" (play tennis, knit, challenge the status quo, garden, bike the streets of NYC, etc.)

Whatever you do to celebrate National Coming Out Day, do something. Take a stand. And if you've already taken a stand for yourself, take a stand for someone else. Letter From Equality NC

Dear Friend,

Hi!  My name is Josh Wynne and I’m one of Equality NC’s new organizers working against the anti-LGBT constitutional amendment.

During the past few weeks, we’ve shared scary news of the anti-LGBT amendment that was filed in the NC Senate.  Here’s something you can do about it.  We’ve also learned encouraging news about polling that says many North Carolinian's are in favor of some form of same-sex relationship recognition.  With your help, we can mobilize fair-minded North Carolinian's against this mean-spirited amendment. 

Whether you’re new to Equality NC or have been involved with us for years, we know you care about this issue and are dedicated to this cause.  You know the damage this amendment would do to LGBT individuals, youth, families, and allies.  Getting postcards signed by your friends, neighbors, family, and coworkers is a great way to both bring the issue to light and to let NC senators and representatives know that voters in their district care about equal rights. 

In order to make a bigger impact, we're asking that each of you gather at least 25 postcards from your social circles, families, friends, co-workers, organizations, and faith communities.  Collect the postcards as they are signed, and we'll include a return envelope with postage for you to send them back to us.  We will duplicate each postcard so that each person's representative and senator receives one.

When we provide legislators with a stack of our postcards urging them not to vote for the anti-LGBT amendment, it not only makes a powerful statement but also proves there are fair-minded North Carolinians in their district.  

Won't you help us make that statement?
Additionally, we need volunteers in our Raleigh office to help us process postcard requests, track outstanding postcard kits, do data entry as we receive completed postcards, duplicate postcards in order to reach the signer's representative and senator, and organize postcards by legislative districts!
