On April 28th, a federal legal challenge to Amendment One was filed on behalf of clergy from across faith traditions, same-sex couples and the United Church of Christ. The case challenges the constitutionality of marriage laws in North Carolina – including Amendment One – that ban marriage between same-sex couples and make it illegal for clergy to perform wedding ceremonies for same-sex couples within their congregation.

is foaming at the mouth, over the fact that NC’s Attorney General Roy Cooper will be giving the Keynote Speech at this year Equality NC Gala in Greensboro. She Feels that since he is the State Attorney who must defend Amendment one shouldn’t be giving speech at this LGBT Gala.

Now we have learned that Roy Cooper will headline a fundraising event for Equality NC - the very group that is working on the ground in North Carolina to overturn the Amendment we worked so hard to get passed!
This is outrageous!
How can an Attorney General charged with defending the definition of marriage contained in our Constitution also headline an event designed to overturn that very same Constitutional provision?
Clearly he is unwilling to stand up for the Amendment that over 60% of North Carolinians support!

EQUALITY NC ANNOUNCES DEPARTURE OF EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, STUART CAMPBELL
RALEIGH, N.C., APRIL 15, 2011– Equality NC and its Board of Directors announced today that Stuart Campbell, the organization’s executive director since 2011, will be leaving the organization sometime in early summer. Campbell led the state’s premier lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) advocacy organization during its high-profile 2011-2012 campaign against Amendment One, North Carolina’s constitutional ban on marriage equality.
“I leave Equality NC with an incredible sense of pride in the movement we have built during what could be considered the most pivotal two years in North Carolina’s LGBT rights movement.” said Campbell. “As positive momentum in favor of LGBT issues continues to build across the nation, region, and state, I am confident in the future of this organization, and remain grateful for the tireless efforts of our board, staff, and supporters to never stop fighting for Equality.”
During Campbell’s tenure with Equality NC, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender (LGBT) advocacy organization has effectively lobbied the North Carolina General Assembly, executive branch, local governments, and electorate on issues like marriage equality, employment discrimination, adoption, domestic partnership, HIV/AIDS, and more.
In the process, Equality NC secured introduction of bills protecting LGBT workers, strengthened the state’s HIV/AIDS prevention and care programs by helping defend funding for critical needs; supported the elections of a growing number of LGBT legislative candidates, including current representative, Marcus Brandon; and built a coalition of partners and community leaders who tirelessly advocate on the behalf of LGBT North Carolinians.
“Over the past two years, our fight to defeat Amendment One galvanized a state full of new and seasoned LGBT leaders and advocates, and, despite Amendment One’s passage, I truly believe we can sustain this positive momentum in future efforts to secure LGBT rights, benefits and protections.” said Campbell.
Under Campbell’s leadership, Equality NC also experienced significant growth. The statewide LGBT organization now boasts over 100,000 supporters, 50,000 online activists, including thousands of donors, hundreds of volunteers, 23 active board members, and a team of six employees. Because of these successes, Equality NC has earned a national reputation as one of the strongest and most well-respected statewide LGBT advocacy groups in the country.
“I will miss working at Equality NC, but moving forward I know the organization has never been in better hands. I will be proud to be one of the thousands of people across this state and this nation who will never stop fighting for Equality in North Carolina,” said Campbell.
Responding to Campbell’s announcement, Elaine Martin, Equality NC Board Chair said, “I am deeply sorry to see Stuart leave. Not only has he had a very positive impact on the organization, but under his leadership we’ve experienced exceptional growth and had milestones in the LGBT movement I never would have thought possible.”
Martin reported that she and Equality NC Foundation Board Chair Ken Wittenauer have already started the process of creating a search committee to oversee the recruitment and selection of the next executive director at Equality NC.
“Today, we focus on acknowledging and celebrating Stuart’s accomplishments,” said Martin. “Speaking for our board of directors, Equality NC is deeply grateful for his work and we wish him the absolute best in his future endeavors.”

Eads, diagnosed with ovarian cancer, was turned down for treatment by two dozen doctors out of fear that treating a transsexual person would damage their reputations. By the time Eads received treatment, the cancer was too far advanced to save his life. During his final year, Robert fell in love with male-to-female transsexual, Lola Cola. Southern Comfort also highlights the discrimination many transgender people encounter when seeking healthcare.

Email Action: Take Action on Anti-LGBT Attack in Boone: Sign Petition, Attend Forum at ASU on Friday
Equality NC again calls on the legislature to add sexual orientation and gender identity to the state's already existing hate crime law after a bias-motivated attack on two young women in Boone. The Safer Communities Act would expand current legislation to include hate crimes based on real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity.
More details are below, but there are two ways you can take action and make a difference.
1) First, if you're in the Boone area this Friday, March 2, please attend a community forum from 6:30-8:30 pm in the Blue Ridge Ballroom of Appalachian State University's Student Union. The two women involved in the assault are confirmed to speak, and Equality NC and The Coalition to Protect All NC Families will also be there.

Paul Stam: What will the marriage amendment do
1. The Marriage Amendment will not adversely affect North Carolina’s economy. A 2011report by the American Legislative Exchange Council ranked states by economic performance between 1999 and 2009 and by economic outlook. 8 of the top 10 economically performing states have marriage amendments. None have legalized same sex marriage, civil unions or domestic partnerships. 9 of the 10 states forecasted to have the poorest economic growth have legalized same sex marriage, civil unions and/or domestic partnerships.
2. The Marriage Amendment Will Not Affect The Enforcement Of Domestic Violence Laws. Opponents would have you think the Amendment obliterates our domestic violence law. The cases they use as authority are Ohio appellate cases later overturned by the Ohio Supreme Court which found the domestic violence statutes consistent with the state’s marriage amendment. In Kansas the outcome was the same. Marriage amendments have had no effect on the enforcement of domestic violence statutes. 30 other states have marriage amendments. In all 30 states domestic violence laws continue to be enforced. I have read and reread our domestic violence statutes. I am unable to even comprehend the logic of this objection.
3. Legally Recognizing Only Heterosexual Marriage Isn’t Discrimination Against Homosexuals Wanting To Marry. Marriage between a man and a woman has existed in virtually every known society. It has served the purpose of channeling procreative sexual activity into an institution which will provide a stable environment for children produced from the sexual union of the partners in marriage. Recognizing that heterosexual marriage has provided the best environment for the rearing of future citizens North Carolina has regulated marriage for at least 340 years. Same sex marriage is an entirely different relationship with a completely different purpose. Expanding the marital institution to other relationships which serve completely different purposes ultimately undermines the institution which has proven to be the best and safest environment for children.
4. The Amendment Will Not Nullify Medical Powers of Attorney (MPOAs), Wills and Trusts if the parties are homosexual partners.
Under G.S. 32A-18 “any competent person who is not engaged in providing health care to the principal for renumeration, and who is 18 years of age or older, may act as a health care agent.” The relationship between the patient and the designated agent does not matter. The intent of the testator and trustor is the “gold standard” in NC for interpreting wills and trusts. The Amendment does not change the intent of the testator in either type of these instruments. The Amendment explicitly states that it will not affect the rights of parties to enter into private contractual agreements.
5. The Marriage Amendment Will Not Determine the Custody and Visitation Rights of Unmarried Parents Unless Their Behavior Affects the Child. Custody orders are based on the “parent”/child relationship, not on the domestic relationship between the “parents”. Courts have based custody and visitation on the “best interest of the child.” NCGS 50-13.2(2007) The sexual behavior of the party petitioning for custody or visitation is not determinative except as it affects the child.
The “de facto parenting doctrine” was applied in 2010 in Boseman v. Jarrell. The Supreme Court refused to allow adoption to an unmarried same sex partner but did award joint custody and visitation rights to that non-biological same sex partner who had become a de facto parent to the child.
I see that Stam is working with the bigots and haters, who would kick their own kids out on to the streets if they are gay..

However, our definition of marriage is vulnerable until we put it into our state constitution. That’s what the Marriage Protection Amendment will do. We hope this ruling serves as a powerful reminder to voters that we must make sure activist judges cannot redefine marriage in our state.”
Hey Tami What will your group do if the amendment is voted down.. What will you little sick we are be oppressed Christian group do ? Since you won’t be able to ask the courts for help.. Once voted down, I’m sure the NC people won’t waste time and money to put it back on the ballot..

With Support like these, we might be the first state in the south to reject this constitutional Amendment banned same-sex marriage..

Barber, II, President of the North Carolina NAACP, will present his Open Letter, entitled, "Whether You Agree or Disagree With Same Sex Marriage because of Personal, Religious, or Moral Beliefs, You Should Not Support a Constitutional Amendment Against It" during the keynote panel discussion at the 2011 Equality NC Foundation Conference & Gala. The NC NAACP's Open Letter has created widespread discussion about the possibilities of dynamic new alliances within the anti-racism, anti-poverty movements in North Carolina.
The keynote panel will begin shortly after 4pm, Saturday afternoon, November 12, in Greensboro at the Elliot University Center on the campus of UNC-Greensboro.
"The North Carolina NAACP is honored to participate in the 2011 Equality NC Foundation Conference," says Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II. "The NC NAACP released our Open Letter in opposition to the discriminatory constitutional amendment, which was pushed by the ultra conservative extremists in the NC General Assembly, because our organization has always opposed any custom, tradition, practice, law or constitutional amendment that denies any right to any person."
Dr. Barber continued, "Founded in 1909, the NAACP currently has more than 2,200 membership units across the United States with branches in every state in the nation. Our mission for 102 years has been to achieve equality of rights and eliminate prejudice among the people of the United States. The NAACP does not and has not taken a position endorsing or opposing same sex marriage. However, the NAACP has a long history of opposing any proposal that would alter the federal or state Constitutions for the purpose of excluding any group or individuals from guarantees of equal protection under the law. Our opposition is based on our mission statement, which calls for the "equality of rights of all persons."
Rev. Barber will join four other human rights leaders on the keynote panel: Rev. Nancy Petty of Raleigh's Pullen Memorial Baptist Church; Rev. T. Equality NC Announces New Executive Director
Equality NC and its Board of Directors announced today that Stuart Campbell, a skilled policy advisor, advocate and administrator with extensive experience in leading and managing private, government and non-profit entities, will serve as the new executive director for Equality NC, the state’s premier lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) advocacy organization. Campbell will begin his tenure on October 24.
“I am deeply honored and excited about the opportunity to serve North Carolina’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and to build upon Equality NC’s tremendous success,” said Campbell, who most recently served as the Community Services manager in the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs in Austin. “I look forward to getting to know and working with our dedicated supporters, legislators and coalition partners as we strive to further Equality NC’s mission to secure equality and justice for the LGBT community in North Carolina.”
Campbell is a seasoned professional whose non-profit experience includes several years as an advocate and lobbyist on disability and anti-poverty issues, ultimately serving as Executive Director of the Coalition on Human Needs in Washington, D.C. In 2008, Campbell joined the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs, first as a senior policy advisor and then as Community Affairs manager, where he administered over $220 million in federal and state funds aimed at alleviating poverty.
What new changes will we see once Campbell take his place in ENC? What wil be his game plan for our upcoming Marriage Amendment. Campbell has an optimistic outlook on the Amendment campaign. “While we may not be able to change the minds and hearts of everyone in the seven short months leading up to the election in May, I am confident that the majority of fair-minded North Carolinians who oppose this amendment will make their will known and we will prevail,” Campbell said.”
Campbell was selected after an extensive national search. The search Committee chair said “It was inspirational to see so many candidates from across the state and the nation eager to bring their talents to the fight for equality and justice at this crucial time in North Carolina’s history.”
I wonder who those were from NC that apply for this position, and was turn down by this committee.
Well I look forward to seeing Campbell in action.. That will be the true test of his abilities to lead us in our upcoming Amendment battle.. Here is wishing him the best of luck..

What do our Democratic Governor, Tea Party Congresswoman, and NAACP President Have in Common?
Answer: All three oppose N.C.'s anti-LGBT amendment.
It would take a lot to have our state NAACP President, Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, Republican U.S. Rep. Renee Ellmers and Democratic Governor Bev Perdue see eye-to-eye.
But all politics aside, they've joined countless fair-minded North Carolinians who have all agreed to vote against legislation that would ban same-sex marriage, as state statute already does, but also prohibit civil unions and strip domestic partner benefits.
They did so as soon as they were informed of the facts: that this amendment is tremendously far-reaching, irresponsible and devastatingly harmful for our state and it's citizens; that it eliminates legal recognitions and protections for all unmarried couples, regardless of their sexual orientation; that it represents an especially insidious message to LGBT North Carolinians, which is that amendment sponsors want to permanently enshrine in our state's founding document the idea that a minority of our citizens do not deserve equal rights, treatment or protection; that this amendment does not stop at banning same-sex marriage, civil unions and domestic partnerships, but could also strip from all unmarried couples the few legal rights and protections they currently have under our laws, including hospital visitation, end-of-life directives, custody arrangements, health and life insurance policies and domestic violence protections; and that this amendment sends a strong message to everyone from diverse business interests to impressionable LGBT youth, that North Carolina 'doesn't want you here.'
That's the power of a little education. And so Equality NC will be bringing "the education" to you in three new ways:
(1) Amendment "Truth Tuesdays"
Whether it's the media calling this a "marriage amendment" (which it is not), or an amendment sponsor claiming this type of discriminatory legislation helps anyone (which it does not), we'll be on Facebook andTwitter (#truthtuesday), where you already are, providing the facts behind the fallacies each week...so that, most importantly, you can share them with all of our potential supporters (i.e. probable voters.)
(2) Election Education
Did you know that the referendum will not be numbered? That you'll be asked to vote "for" or "against," rather than "yes" or "no?" That there will be two ballots that will need to be printed (at double the cost to taxpayers), to accommodate this hateful legislation? We'll be working tirelessly to share what we know about this referendum--with new information coming in from day-to-day--about the ins and outs of the amendment and the election day landscape.
(3) 2011 ENC Conference & Gala
Want to learn how to fight this amendment first-hand? Want to gain grassroots organizing skills to join the campaign to oppose LGBT inequality in N.C.? Equality NC wants you to Take Action Now…
Join us on October 11th as we set the stage for our victory by beginning conversations with voters we know will turn out for the May 8th election.
We will be out talking to voters who exit their polling locations educating voters about the harms of the Anti-LGBT Marriage Amendment and asking them to 'Take the Pledge' to vote against the amendment. Nervous about talking to voters? Don't be! We will provide a full training on how to approach voters, how to politely ignore naysayers, and how to overall have a good time while doing important work against this amendment! Join us!
