NAACP: Justice for John McNeil on the Wilson County Courthouse steps
John McNeil was sentenced to life in a Georgia prison because he defended himself and his family’s 'castle' against an armed white trespasser’s assault.
His conviction was appealed.
Justice did not prevail.
One Justicealso let it be known that,
Six Georgia Supreme Court Justices reviewed the cold record of John
McNeil’s trial and found no errors in his conviction of felony murder
and life sentence. The seventh justice, Chief Justice Leah Ward
Sears, had major problems with the case.Chief Justice Sears wrote1: “I conclude that no rational trier of fact
could find, based on the evidence presented at trial, that the State
disproved McNeil’s claim of self‐defense beyond a reasonable doubt.
Accordingly, I must dissent…Because my examination of the record shows that the State failed to
disprove John McNeil’s claim of self‐defense beyond a reasonable
doubt, I respectfully dissent to the Court’s affirmance of McNeil’s
conviction for murder.”
The officers determined that John McNeil acted in self defense and did not arrest him. Later, however, the District Attorney brought the matter before a grand jury. Indictments were brought. The man who tried to defend himself and his home was tried, convicted of felony murder and sentenced to life in prison.
He was solely convicted because Epps was a white man, and in Georgia no matter what, they can’t allow a black man to kill a white man ever, even in self defense.
Race still play a huge part in our legal system,
In calling for a reexamination of the case, NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous said, “ Unfortunately, this court and prosecutor - who overruled local police to pursue this case – is more influenced by Georgia’s legacy of racism than current law. This appears to be opportunism on the part of the prosecutor. I find it curious that no white man is serving time under similar circumstances in the state.”

Race to the Ballots comes to Rocky Mount
by James Smith and David Cappel.
Tonight a few small groups united for the same cause, to fight against the upcoming “Amendment 1” ballot initiative. The meet up was hosted by Rocky Mount’s local chapter of Pflag and UU Church.
It began with a social time while waiting for Jen and her entourage to arrive. The meeting started with the usual Pflag agenda and introductions. They briefly touched on their group business and afterward an invitation to attend their first major fund-raiser (the not the official name) called “Jimmy Creech event,” then the first guest speaker took the podium.
Jake Gellar-Goad, from Democracy NC had come from Durham to share his’ group upcoming events, and to show his support of Equality NC and his opposition to Amendment 1. Short and very to the point he turned the podium over the Jen Jones of ENC and Race to the Ballot runner.
She is putting a face to the NC equality movement. She has drive and ambition that is unequaled. She is risking permanent knee damage—for her cause.
Jen began with definition of the defense of Marriage Act and how that same definition not only affects us but would affect others in future battles with NC Legislative. She already anticipates some of the pitfalls ahead if the Amendment passes. But like she says “if I can get my mother to understand and vote no on this Amendment—then any of us should be able to talk others about it. If you leave this place and talk to ten people—by the time May 8th comes around—voters will understand what this Amendment is really about and vote against it or if nothing else ,not vote for it.”
There was some Q&A; one lady asking if would be beneficial to seek a Resolution Opposing the Amendment from the Rocky Mount City Council. Another person ask, “if we did vote down this amendment and got the marriage law over turn, could the Legislature bring up another type of Amendment to block Same-sex Marriage again? She reply “that they, but doubt if they would have resources to get it past.”

Hate March or the right to assemble
This past Saturday, while eastern NC was preparing for hurricane Irene, in the West they were having a Pride Festival.. Yes while some in NC was holding down the fort, others where a street party, wow..
Charlotte pride is held every year, and every year they are invaded by a bunch of bible carrying citizens.
This year was no different for past gatherings. However this Year the number of religious protesters whom show up to protest the event were larger then before.
They come to preach the word of God, and some just right out hatred for others. To group them all in one category is wrong..
So this year it was the color red everywhere that marked these folks.. They were lead by Michael Brown. Many of his group hurled insults and condemnation at the attendees of the Pride event, while others of his group had peaceful discussion with a few of the attendees.
They invade our events, call us names, while most of us just go on about our business, never giving them any thought, unless we see a very hot Hottie, then a few us will chat with them.. However we very seldom invade theirs; while they show up at almost every event that we have..
The Question is why do we constantly call them bigots and so on.. They are practicing their rights under the very same law as we do. Joe of Joemygod.com named his piece “more on the Charlotte Hate march.”
The other thing I don’t understand about mine/our community is why we get so bent out of shape when they show up to ours, we know that they are going to come to them. Yet, we don’t go to theirs to voice our voices, why?
The only recently fundie event that I can think of that our community members showed up for was this May in Raleigh. When a couple of group got together for a Protect Marriage Rally in Raleigh..
Yes they had their rally, however a few community members did show up.
This group stood very quietly, beside/behind the stage. However they were ask to leave, which they didn’t. Well, not right away anyway.
The fundie don’t like when we show up, they claim it was private event on public property each time.. Yet we don’t force them to leave when they show up at our rallies.
In June our Community had our marriage rally.. Yes; and they showed up..
This shot was taken after we allowed them to stay, the only requested that they couldn’t used the blow horn anymore.. yes they weren’t very happy, since they could preach loudly. They just stood off to the side for 45 minutes..
I have to wonder why are upcoming rally will hold for us..

Exmore-Willis Wharf Elementary School
Exmore-Willis Wharf Elementary School, fourth grade thru the sixth, Front view of the long closed Exmore - Willis Wharf school. The county let the building sit vacant for so long that the entire roof collapsed. To my knowledge, it was only AFTER the roof collapsed that they decided to try to sell it.... this is after a new school was built beside it. The new school was built with money from the lottery, instead of adding on to the building they just built a new school and allow the old school to fall apart.
Talking about a waste of state resources, the old Exmore-Willis Wharf school could have been apart of the new school; it could have been turn into a senior citizens center, yet the state dept.of education just let it sit there and rot..

the while it was being built
(virginia edu) the school was built some time after 1913, the school before was wooden structure one
