RALEIGH, NC - In light of the new budget proposals introduced by the North Carolina House and Senate that continue to take aim at the state's most vulnerable, the North Carolina NAACP and the Forward Together Moral Movement will hold a media call tomorrow, Thursday June 12 to discuss its plans for the next phase of the movement - in particular, the mobilization for the Mass Moral Monday on June 16.
On the call, the Movement will directly challenge the lies, distortions and misrepresentations that continue to come from the extremist state leadership of NC House Speaker Thom Tillis, NC Senate Leader Phil Berger and Governor Pat McCrory. Just this week, instead of listening to the people, Senate Leader Berger distorted information and misled teachers and students about why North Carolina did not have enough money to fund our public schools.
Since the NC General Assembly began its short session on May 14, people who have been impacted by these extreme policies have attempted to petition their legislators and governor directly about the destruction these laws are wreaking on our state.
These two budget proposals demonstrate that our lawmakers have ignored the Movement's calls for repealing these egregious policies from last summer, including the denial of Medicaid expansion, tax breaks for millionaires and corporations, deep cuts to public education, the school voucher program, the elimination of the Earned Income Tax Credit and the refusal of federal unemployment benefits, among others.
The Forward Together Moral Movement remains steadfast in its opposition to a state budget that takes from the least of these. The movement is mobilizing for a Mass Moral Monday on June 16 to oppose these budget proposals and these upfront attacks on working people, people of color, women, the sick, the poor and other minorities.
Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, president of the North Carolina NAACP, will join activists and people affected by these policies on Thursday's call to discuss the plans for the Mass Moral Monday. Dr. Barber will also unpack the distortions of Senate Leader Berger and speak to the destruction Speaker Tillis' and Senate Leader Berger's budget proposals would cause.
