Did Susi H Hamilton sell out the clean water, for a $60 million film tax credit for her area?????

That came as a surprise to Hamilton's seatmate, Rep. Pricey Harrison, D- Guilford, who authored the letter and put Hamilton's name on it. She described the situation as "uncomfortable," but took issue with Hamilton's characterization.

Harrison said Hamilton knew what the letter entailed before she volunteered to sign it. Even after a copy of it was sent to Hamilton's office, Harrison said, Hamilton never voiced concerns about it until Monday.

That's when a $60 million film tax credit, widely considered dead for the session, suddenly re-emerged. The credit, a one-year extension of a refundable credit set to expire at the end of 2013, could help Hamilton's district attract the sequel to "Captain America." The production company has been looking at Wilmington as a potential filming location.

House lawmakers called a special Finance Committee meeting at 10:30 p.m. Monday to insert the tax credit into a bill dedicated to fixing technical problems in state law.

Shortly after that, Hamilton voted for the fracking override. And shortly after that, the bill containing the tax credit was approved.

Hamilton said today there was no connection between the the film tax credit and her apparent change of heart on the fracking bill. She made no apologies for supporting the tax credit championed by fellow New Hanover Rep. Danny McComas.

just who the hell does she think she is kidding? She sold her veto vote for money.. that will benefit her area, while the future of fresh water from wells and stream are now at risk..

So Ms “sold out fresh water” Hamilton was it worth?? In the future when communities water sources become undrinkable I hope the citizens of those area will hunt you down and force you to drink the water that you sold out for a damn film tax credit..

The NC Association of Educators won a small victory by getting a Judge to order a temporary restraining order, putting the mid-nite override bill on hold.

This vote will be the undoing of the NCGA GOP. Tillis is face a backlash over this vote, where is claims that they had the right to do.. But we all know if the was reverse they would be doing the complaining and whining about it. That the Dem’s over step their power and so on.. Its ok when they do, not when the other side does..

I can only hope that this will wake up NC citizens, so they can see what the GOP is doing to our state before it too late..

The Republicans' social agenda has, with this bill, invaded a woman's life

On the abortion override, the House voted 72-47 in favor of a bill requiring a woman to have an ultrasound of the fetus, consider an offer to see the shape and hear a heartbeat in her uterus, receive state-mandated counseling, and wait 24 hours before an abortion.

"The intent is to give women the information they need," said sponsor Rep. Ruth Samuelson, R-Mecklenburg. "Large numbers of women want this bill."

Women don’t need the Damn Government involve in this matter.

However Ruth, thinks she knows what is best for the women whom she think is beneath her in life.

The new restrictions would keep abortions legal and make them safer than before by requiring doctors and clinics to have insurance and backup plans, Samuelson said.

Democrats argued the restrictions were less about safety and full information than the Republican majority serving the political priorities of its supporters.

"It's a sad day for the women of North Carolina," said Rep. Deborah Ross, D-Wake.

Rep. Alma Adams, D-Guilford, said the General Assembly would never pass a law that would place such restrictions on a procedure for men.

"I was created from the womb of my mother just like every person here, and my gender should not determine whether I or not I can make a decision what I could do with my body," Adams said.

"It's a place the state has no right to be, constitutionally or medically," said Rep. Rick Glazier, D-Cumberland.

Rep. Jim Crawford, D-Granville, who also sided with Republicans on the budget and other override votes this week, cast the deciding vote on the abortion bill. He switched his "no" vote from last month to a "yes" vote on Tuesday's override.

SB 33 expands access to care and will attract scores of new medical jobs. Under the current system, North Carolina doctors are forced to administer expensive and unnecessary tests and procedures. The high cost of that defensive medicine is then passed on to consumers in the form of higher insurance costs and to taxpayers in the form of costlier taxpayer-funded medical programs for the poor.

Tillis on Voter ID–Veto

Yesterday afternoon, Governor Perdue VETOed the VOTER ID bill passed by the North Carolina House and Senate early in June.  The legislation will simply require anyone who shows up at a polling location to provide a valid government-issued ID:  a driver's license, student ID, passport or other ID.  If a voter does not have an ID, the legislation provides for the issuance of a free ID at a DMV or Board of Elections office.

 

Some 29 states have VOTER ID laws of varying degrees.  North Carolina is one of a minority of states that has NO VOTER ID requirement at all.  For more information about VOTER ID laws across the US CLICK this link.

But House Speaker Thom Tillis called the veto a "disappointment:":

 

“Governor Perdue’s over-eager veto pen has struck again, showcasing the latest disappointment in a record-setting string of vetoes this year.  Good policies continue to be met with hostility in the Governor’s office, and that is unfortunate for the people of North Carolina.”

 

And the bill's chief sponsor, House Majority Whip Ruth Samuelson, R-Mecklenburg, said the veto runs counter to Perdue's voting record as a state lawmaker:

 

“We are now in a minority of states that require no special informed consent for abortion and that is shameful, especially with a female governor. Having come this far in leadership, Gov. Perdue should have even greater respect for the ability of women to make careful choices when given adequate information. Yet, she made no attempt to work with us in this effort to make abortion safer and rarer, a goal even many abortion advocates support.

 

"While in the state senate, Gov. Perdue routinely voted against funding for abortion, then as governor she vetoes legislation that provides women the information they need when faced with that same procedure. Unfortunately, it’s just further evidence that Gov. Perdue is more interested in keeping her title than maintaining the principles she voiced as a legislator.”

These two crack pots need to be voted out of office asap. Tillis, sorry to tell you that man should never be allow to tell a women what she can and can’t do about Her body and her rights.. Ruth you are out of touch period..

Another Veto, You Go Bev

Today, Governor Bev Perdue stood with the women of North Carolina by vetoing H.B.854, the “Women Know Nothing” bill!

Without her veto, this extremist legislation would have become law, drastically altering reproductive choice and freedom in our state. H.B.854 would have established extreme barriers to abortion care, including a 24-hour waiting period, a mandated ultrasound, and a requirement that physicians read women a script written by anti-choice politicians

In a statement, Perdue said the bill would interfere with doctor-patient relationships.

“This bill is a dangerous intrusion into the confidential relationship that exists between women and their doctors," she said.  "The bill contains provisions that are the most extreme in the nation in terms of interfering with that relationship. Physicians must be free to advise and treat their patients based on their medical knowledge and expertise and not have their advice overridden by elected officials seeking to impose their own ideological agenda on others.”

This is Perdue's 10th veto of the year.

Legislators motivated by prejudice, not policy

Harassing a working population within the borders of our state will do nothing to benefit North Carolina residents. The economic livelihood of our state is tied to the freedom of everyone in it—not just citizens—to work freely and gainfully.

Governor Perdue should veto this bill. Short-sighted bills like HB 36 demonstrate why immigration is a federal prerogative—not one to be considered by the states. Legislators who support this bill are motivated by a prejudiced and tribalistic attitude rather than the desire to craft thoughtful legislation that matches the economic needs of our state.

“They are motivated by prejudice, not policy,” said Alicia Torres, a member of the NC DREAM Team. “They are either prejudice or grossly oversimplifying the issue.”

This bill will do nothing to improve the economic livelihood of our state and criminalize a class of people for doing nothing but attempting to live out their lives peacefully.

By voting against the DREAM Act, Senator Kay Hagan added her name to the list of Democrats who have betrayed immigration advocates. Unless Perdue would like to join her, she should veto HB 36.

Gov. Perdue Vetoes Senate Bill 727

Gov. Perdue today vetoed Senate Bill 727 and issued the following statement:

“This bill is nothing but a petty and vindictive attempt to seek retribution against a group that opposed the Republican budget. The bill unfairly singles out this one group for special treatment. The state Constitution requires organizations with similar missions to be treated equally. This bill clearly does not follow that requirement, therefore I veto it.” 

Below is the text of Gov. Perdue’s veto message:

GOVERNOR’S OBJECTIONS AND VETO MESSAGE

Senate Bill 727, “An Act to Eliminate the Dues Checkoff Option for Active and Retired Public School Employees” 

This bill is simply one more attack on teachers by the Republicans in the General Assembly.  The effect of Senate Bill 727 is to unfairly and arbitrarily single out one group given that State law allows a dues check off option for every other comparable association of employees.  It does so without even attempting to offer any rational basis why -- which is not surprising because no rational basis exists.  In addition to being unfair, this bill is also illegal because it violates the rule under our State Constitution that similar groups must be treated similarly.

In short, the Republican leadership is punishing teachers because teachers had the “audacity” to publicly protest a budget that contains the most devastating cuts to education in our State’s history.  Teachers have rights, and I refuse to allow the General Assembly to take them away.

Therefore, I veto this bill.
