Senate Bill 480 would disallow school employees from working on political campaigns during working hours, use the authority of his or her position to secure support or opposition for a political candidate, and use public funds to these ends.

The North Carolina NAACP and the Forward Together Moral Movement Applaud Court Decision to Rule Unconstitutional the NC Extremists' Attempt to End Teacher Tenure
DURHAM, NC - In a sweeping victory for North Carolina's teachers and its children, a Wake County judge ruled today that the extremist lawmakers' attempt to end teacher tenure in our state is unconstitutional and issued a permanent injunction against the law that would have given educators a raise in exchange for eliminating their tenure.
The North Carolina NAACP and the Forward Together Moral Movement welcome Judge Robert Hobgood's decision and remain confident that while extremism may flourish in this General Assembly, these morally indefensible laws will not stand when subjected to the strict constitutional scrutiny of our court system.
"Again and again, the courts are reminding the extremists in our General Assembly led by Speaker Thom Tillis that holding an ideological majority does not give you the right or the power to run roughshod over the constitutional protections guaranteed to our public education system and to our public school teachers," said Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, president of the North Carolina NAACP and architect of the Forward Together Moral Movement. "The courts moved towards achieving justice in public education 60 years ago in its Brown v. Board of Education decision. The courts are moving towards justice here in North Carolina again 60 years later."
On Monday, May 19, the NC NAACP, the Forward Together Moral Movement, its HKonJ coalition partners and North Carolinians fed up with these extremist policies will join together at Moral Monday in Raleigh to push for pay raises for our teachers that do not require them to give up their tenure and the employment protections that come along with it.

RALEIGH - State Sen. Jerry Tillman, a leading GOP lawmaker and the head of a newly created legislative task force on education funding, told an assembly of concerned educators, parents and community leaders on Feb. 25 that North Carolina lacked the funding to provide better compensation for all its teachers.
When discussing a proposal pushed by extremists in the General Assembly to lure 25 percent of North Carolina's teachers away from their tenured-track positions with $500 a year bonuses, Tillman said that the state could only find the money to make that offer to a quarter of the state's public school teachers.

RALEIGH - At the end of three hours of heated arguments, veteran Judge Robert A. Hobgood made two decisions on Monday. First he denied the request by lawyers defending the Tea Party's vouchers program to dismiss the lawsuit brought by progressive community leaders to stop the duplicitous attack on public education. Then he announced to the packed courtroom that he would consider the request by community leaders for a temporary injunction that would stop the vouchers in their tracks while those of us who are opposed gather further evidence for a full trial later this year.

RALEIGH - On the birthday of Lincoln and the NAACP, the NC NAACP filed a brief in Wake County Court challenging the constitutionality of the extremists' new school voucher program. This program was passed last year as part of a regressive attack on public school teachers and county school systems. It will transfer $11 million from public schools to a fund that will give $4200 in taxpayer dollars to a small proportion of students whose parents want to enroll their kids in private schools.

Book Banning in North Carolina, Just wrong
Recently, the Brunswick County Board of Education met to discuss whether or not to remove the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Color Purple” from a high school reading list. The meeting marked at least the third time this year that a North Carolina school board has openly considered removing from a reading list or altogether banning a critically acclaimed work of literature after a small group of parents complained about its content. - See more here:

Martin Street, Raleigh, NC, the North Carolina NAACP will hold a news conference to: 1) Introduce a new wave of arrestees; 2) Discuss the NC General Assembly's unseemly rush to start killing people on Death Row, even though the courts found gross racial bias in the way the state conducts its business of death; 3) Question mean-spirited NC Senate budget; 4) Announce the launch of the Forward Together Movement Grassroots Organizing Tour next week; 5) Call for a mass rally on Monday, June 3.
The June 3 Rally will focus on the twin pillars of democracy: Voting Rights and Education. In observance of Memorial Day, no protests will be held this Monday, May 27.
"Last Monday, another courageous wave of North Carolinians, ranging from 18 to 92 years old, from all backgrounds and all parts of the state, made the difficult moral decision to place their bodies, souls, and minds into the regressive machine on Jones Street," said Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, President of the NC NAACP. "The machine is run by a group of selfish people, who promote private policies for the few, by the few, and of the few."
"As North Carolina wakes up to the moral low ground taken by this group, the Forward Together Movement grows by leaps and bounds," Barber said. "Next week we take the fight to the home districts of the group of legislators passing out-of-state ALEC-written regressive bills."
No "Moral Monday" protests are scheduled for Monday, May 27, 2013 in observance of Memorial Day.
