Today, on the floor of the North Carolina General Assembly, Senate Leader Phil Berger said the following:
“For too many years, North Carolina tried to tax and spend its way to prosperity,” Berger said. “And for too many years, North Carolina lost jobs, lost businesses, failed to educate many of our children and struggled to compete.
“Our leaders had lost their way. And our state lost its place as the leader of the South, and the envy of the nation.”
North Carolina Democratic Party spokesman Clay Pittman issued the following response:
Senate Leader Phil Berger’s statement on the floor of the North Carolina General Assembly is disgraceful. The Senator seems to be forgetting that it was the Democratic Party that built our Community College system and our University system into model programs for the rest of the country. He has forgotten that it was Democratic leadership that has made North Carolina a consistently top-5 ranked state for business. He has forgotten that it was the Democratic Party that built the Research Triangle Park, that recognized that Pre-K education is the most important asset a child can have, and that have always known that good jobs grow from a good education.
Senator Berger also seems to have forgotten that his party has fought every step of the way to take us backwards. Just last year, under his leadership, North Carolina Republicans slashed funding for our schools, put profits for special interests ahead of the health safety our citizens, and demonstrated blatant disregard for racial justice. Senator Berger continued, saying “To my Republican colleagues, we must show our constituents, this state, and this country that there is a real difference between a Washington Republican and a North Carolina Republican.” As the NCGOP looks to disenfranchise over 600,000 North Carolinians, it looks like the Senator may have a point. While Washington Republicans have proven themselves more than capable of obstructing progress, the North Carolina Republican Party continues to show that they are eager to dismantle it entirely.

Editorial: Lawmakers, please no more shenanigans
Trust and government often have a strained relationship in the eyes of the public. The Republican-controlled N.C.
The Enemy Expatriation Act (H.R. 3166; S. 1698), an act that the U.S. Congress is now considering, that will allow the U.S. Government to take away citizenship of anybody that is considered a hostile enemy or supporting hostility towards the U.S. Government, is similar to the Nazi Factions Nuremberg laws where Adolf Hitler took away Germans citizenship based on race, bloodtypes, and those against the Hitler regime.

BERGER: In Nazi Germany, some of you may not realize that Adolf Hitler came to power through the ballot box and even though he was elected by the people, he was able to use the instruments of power to take away the rights of individuals….[I]f you were gay, you were required to wear a pink triangle to single that you were a member of that despised group. Now, I believe that if we pass this motion to concur, we are essentially putting a pink triangle into our state constitution.

Candidate for Mayor Charges Charlotte Host Committee Lacking Transparency
Charlotte, NC – Republican nominee for Mayor Scott Stone called today for DNC convention organizers to be more transparent regarding the convention’s costs, logistical requirements, fundraising, and likely use of union labor.
“The people of Charlotte have a right to know what to expect from next year’s Democratic National Convention,” said Scott Stone, Republican nominee in this fall’s election for Charlotte mayor. “We have a tremendous opportunity for positive national and international exposure for Charlotte. The last thing we want is to turn this positive event into a liability by hiding costs and facts.”
Stone called on Mayor Anthony Foxx to personally hold himself accountable for ensuring transparency. “The mayor does not hesitate to go on CNN to discuss the convention, but neither he nor his Press Czar are available to local press for questions about convention costs or the Host Committee’s fundraising progress. If he wants to take credit for the convention, he must also be accountable for the details.”

Last week, Republicans in the North Carolina General Assembly decided to challenge a court ruling on pre-kindergarten access could lead to an appeal of the landmark Leandro school-quality case.
A recent court ruling overturned the Republican's attempt to charge the parents of at-risk children a premium fee to send their 4 year olds to pre-K programs offered by public schools. Now, in GOP challenge to that ruling, Senate Republican leader Phil Berger's chief of staff said in a memo to Senate Republicans that, by appealing the ruling, the GOP’s ultimate goal of overturning the Leandro case could be a possible benefit of such action.
Governor Perdue acted swiftly in response to the court ruling by issuing an executive order restoring the high standards and accessibility of the ‘More at Four’ program for all at-risk children. Sen. Berger's Chief of Staff's reaction was to personally insult the Governor by suggesting that she is a 2-year old who needs to attend day care. Shameful.
Republicans clearly believe that slashing schools budgets, eliminating pre-k programs for as-risk children and decimating our public colleges and universities are all things to laugh about—Democrats don't think there is anything funny about this destructive agenda.
This effort by the GOP is nothing more than a Trojan horse designed to turn back the clock on decades of progress and excellence in North Carolina’s public education system. I have no doubt that the ultimate goal for the Republicans is to overturn the Leandro case, de-fund our schools and completely dismantle public education in North Carolina.
The Leandro case is the legal foundation that provides for a sound basic education for every public school student in North Carolina. By attempting to overturn the case, Republicans in the General Assembly are attempting to return to an era of extreme inequality in public education.
You don’t have to look far to find journalists, citizens and experts from all across the state who not only support the ‘More at Four’ program; they also oppose overturning the Leandro case. It’s destructive, it’s immoral and it’s against everything that we stand for in North Carolina.
It has become painfully clear that Tillis, McCrory, Berger and their allies in the General Assembly are out of control and must be stopped—Speaker Thom Tillis was even quoted recently as saying that he will "do whatever the hell he wants".
A simple penny would have would have prevented the Tillis, McCrory and Berger team cuts to pre-K programs like More at Four, and would have protected teacher and teaching assistant positions in the classroom. Make no mistake about it, the Republicans are dead-set on turning the clock back on North Carolina—unfortunately for them, Democrats will simply not let it happen.

CHARLOTTE - NC Democratic Party Executive Director Jay Parmley issued the following statement in response to Pat McCrory's verbal attacks on the Governor in regard to new unemployment numbers.
"Pat McCrory's attack on the Governor is a shame and his solutions-- as far as we can intuit them-- are a sham. The former Mayor 
He hasn't even announced he's running for governor, which enables him to attack Bev Perdue without facing any scrutiny himself. That's cowardly and safe-- two things that Bev Perdue hasn't had the luxury to be since she defeated McCrory three years ago.
From McCrory, no solutions. He gave us a hint about his agenda last week when he issued a robocall urging supporters to demand that their legislators override Bev Perdue's vetoes. We can presume that he would have rubber stamped everything this republican legislative majority proposed.
This leaves voters triangulating McCrorys positions from one-sided press releases, speeches to tea party gatherings and the GOP agenda.
On the jobs issue, we can only assume that he would have permanently frozen long term unemployment benefits-- without relief-- as the leaders of his party attempted to do this year.
He would have allowed them to make even deeper cuts to our schools and the public sector, which represent the single greatest job losses government has direct control over. In this terrible economy, he would have laid off far more teachers than Thom Tillis and Phil Berger did this year already.
The unemployment rate would be even higher under Governor McCrory.
Meanwhile, the Berger/Tillis/McCrory formula for job creation is "reg reform, med mal and energy" (quoting an @SenatorBerger tweet in response to today's numbers). Not one of them has hung any details on that scant recipe for recovery.
Regulatory reform this session has taken the form of gutting environmental rules. Are we to assume that McCrory would entice manufacturers by advertising the most lenient pollution rules in the region?
Their Med Mal legislation sought to strip patients of their right to seek damages the event of an emergency room error. This creates job opportunities for whom? The lousiest doctors in the country, unemployable in states that care about consumer rights?
Finally, their energy plan seeks to open our pristine coasts and the piedmont to drilling and natural gas fracking. This would welcome Big Oil to the Tarheel State, creating a revenue stream for Republican politicians looking for political donations, and the potential for environmental disaster and polluted water for the rest of us.
Republican office holders and also-maybe-might-of-rans like Pat McCrory are pitching the same tired trickle down economics that most of us discounted years ago: tax breaks for millionaires, low wages for workers, zero regulations for polluters and big business.
It's a lie, and Pat McCrory is pushing it with impunity. If he'd like to announce he's running for office and stand before the people and the press to face our questions, he should do it. But the unfounded attacks that non-mayor, non-candidate McCrory has become so fond of don't do a thing to help bring down the unemployment rate. That's cowardice, pure and simple."
“This amendment is completely unnecessary and only serves to cloud the debate over ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ repeal by pointlessly injecting the issue of marriage equality into the conversation,” Solmonese said. “Since Pentagon officials have made it clear that they are bound by DOMA like every other federal agency, it’s puzzling why Rep. Foxx would question whether our military leaders understand this point.”

There has been no indication that the governor planned to close the prison, but she could have under budget legislation that orders her to close four prisons statewide.
The budget gave her administration the option to pick any four minimum security prisons to close by Jan. 1. This is intended to save $5.4 million this coming fiscal year and $10.8 million annually after that.
In response to a prior query from the legislature, the state Department of Correction named Bladen Correctional and three other prisons as the best ones to close to cut costs.
Brisson, a Democrat, sought to protect the prison when he agreed in early May to support the legislature's Republican majority in passing the state budget. Yes, he sold education out for a prison and the few hundred that work there. While tens of thousands of Teachers and their Aids would lose or might their jobs..
I think its time to go from Dem to Rep..
When we have been honest and compassionate, we have participated in the difficult work of that progress. It is only when we have been afraid, when we have stood aside or turned away that we have found ourselves on the wrong side of the great battles for human rights in America.
Total equality is the ultimate goal. Through many thousand acts of personal and collective courage in the struggle for LGBT rights, be it a single teenager coming out to his family or a City Council passing a non-discrimination hiring clause, we move ever closer to that goal.
The Democratic Party acts upon the belief that history moves toward inclusion and understanding. While politics is an exercise in patience and persuasion, we will do everything in our power to remember that equality isn't an abstract concept; it is a daily battle for dignity and access. When that daily battle is your life, patience with the process is not always easy.
But while progress may be slow, it isn't silent. That LGBT Pride Month is being celebrated so widely is an indication that fear is subsiding across the community. The North Carolina Democratic Party joins President Obama and Democrats across America in celebrating unity, equality, and the lives of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people everywhere.
The contributions of LGBT citizens to this state are unquestionable. Likewise, no one should have any doubts about the North Carolina Democratic Party's unwavering support for equality.

The worst Democrats money can buy: (l-r) State Reps. William Owens, William Brisson, Jim Crawford, Tim Spear and Dewey Hill moved to the dark side, joining Republicans to vote for the state budget. Gov. Perdue vetoed the budget Sunday, but since they've indicated they'll stick with the GOP, there will be enough votes to override the veto.
I have to wonder why they did what they did. What are they getting in return???

one reason could be that June 15th was Teachers lobby day at NCGA, now the Representatives don’t have to worry about meeting all these teachers face to face. “if we see no pink slip then they don’t exist” that is why we must vote at Midnight..

Less than 25% of respondents approve of the budget state-wide.
Statewide, only 36% of voters think that it’s most important to end the temporary one cent sales tax compared to 50% who think it’s more vital to minimize cuts to education spending.
In Speaker Tillis’ district, the favorable/unfavorable was 24/41, and in Speaker Berger’s district, it was 27/44. Results around education were similar: in Berger’s district, 53% of voters think it’s more important to protect education vs. 36% who think it’s more important to roll back the sales tax, and in Tillis’ district where 51% side with education to 41% for reducing the sales tax.
So, in 2012 who make republicans will be voted out of NCGA, also what will happen to the Five Dems who vote with the Republicans???
Now we need to call the 5 Dems who voted for the budget to stop the veto override! Doesn't matter where you live, call them today, call them tomorrow, call them multiple times per day:
