Places of Worship to Host Moral March Services Statewide this Weekend to Rally Their Communities for HKonJ in an Effort that Transcends Religion and Denomination

DURHAM - In preparation for Moral March on Raleigh HKonJ People's Assembly, more than 50 places of worship around the state will be hosting their own Moral March services on their respective holy days this weekend to rally their congregations and their communities.

Religious leaders at churches, synagogues and mosques across denominations will preach about the moral imperative of standing up against injustice and immoral, unconstitutional governance by making their voices heard on Feb. 8 in Raleigh during the Forward Together Movement's Moral March.

"Caring for the least of these, looking out for the good of the whole, standing up for justice and with love-these must be at the center of our public policy," Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II said, citing Matthew, Micah and the preamble of the NC constitution. "But the morally-indefensible policies passed by Gov. McCrory and the extremists in the General Assembly don't just ignore the sick, the poor, women and children-these policies kick people when they are down. They take away voting rights and equal protection under the law for African Americans, women, immigrants and the LGBT community."

This weekend's Moral March services will rally the religious community around the state to stand up for its deepest moral values and for our constitutional principles. Numerous pastors, rabbis and imams have agreed to talk to members of the media about their social-justice sermons and their motivations for  for the Moral March on Raleigh. (See below for acomplete listing and additional details.)

As scholar and theologian Walter Brueggemann writes, "The prophetic moral critique does not ask if the vision can be implemented, for questions of implementation are of no consequence until the vision can be imagined. The imagination must come before the implementation."

The pastors participating this week in the Moral March services, alongside the NC NAACP and its coalition partners, are engaged in this project of imagination: they are creating the vision of an anti-racist, anti-poverty, pro-labor and deeply moral movement that strives for justice and equality under the law. And this Moral Movement will march onward on Feb. 8with the immovable optimism of a people who know there can and will be a better way to live together. These leaders will call our state to prayer, repentance and transformation, guiding us towards the better way and the beloved community.

"Hope is the refusal to accept the reading of reality, which is the majority opinion," Brueggemann continues. "This hope is subversive, for it limits the grandiose pretension of the present, daring to announce that the present to which we have all made commitments is now called into question."

At the Moral March, thousands of people from around the state and across the country will gather in Raleigh to raise their voices against the morally-indefensible, constitutionally-inconsistent and economically-insane policies pushed by extremists in the NC General Assembly.

The rally for the Mass Moral March on Raleigh will begin at 9:30 am on Feb. 8 at Shaw University on Wilmington St between South St and MLK Jr Blvd. More information about the event can be found here. Don't forget to RSVP your attendance at the Moral March!

Forward Together Movement to Host a Moral Monday 'Cost and Loss' Policy Briefingon Feb. 3 to Explore Damages Inflicted on North Carolinians by the Extremist Policies Passed by the General Assembly and Signed by Gov. McCrory

RALEIGH - In order to better understand the damage inflicted on our state last year by extremists in the General Assembly, the Forward Together Moral Movement kicks off 2014 with its first Moral Monday event on Feb. 3 in Raleigh - the "Cost and Loss" Policy Briefing.

The briefing will bring together scholars, economists, business people and policy experts to explain how the laws and regulations passed by the General Assembly and supported by Gov. Pat McCrory have cost the average North Carolinian morally, economically, socially, politically and physically.

"While Gov. McCrory, supported by Speaker Tillis, Senate Leader Berger, Budget Director Art Pope and other extremists in the NC General Assembly, continues to tout that NC is on a "Carolina Comeback," we must expose the reality of a "Carolina Set-Back," said Reverend Dr. William J. Barber, II, president of the North Carolina NAACP and convener of the Moral March HKonJ People's Assembly. "With these policies in place, North Carolina is moving backwards, not forward."

Using their expertise in fields ranging from criminal justice to the economy, the Cost and Loss speakers will do just that. Confirmed panelists include historian Tim Tyson, the NCAE's Jessica Holmes and political scientist Jarvis Hall. A list of participants is included below.

Starting at 3 pm on Monday, the event will take place at the Martin St Baptist Church Family Life Center, located at 1001 E Martin St, Raleigh, NC. For all those unable to attend in person, the NC NAACP will be live-streaming the event. (Access the live-stream here.)

After Dr. Barber gives opening remarks, the scholars, experts and activists will present on their respective issues for an hour before the floor will be opened up to questions from audience members and the media. People watching the event over the live stream are invited to also submit their questions through Twitter by tweeting at @ncnaacp or using the hashtag #CostandLoss.

The 'Cost and Loss' Policy Briefing will pave the way for the Moral March HKonJ People's Assembly on Feb. 8 where thousands of people from around the state and across the country will gather in Raleigh to raise their voices against the morally-indefensible, constitutionally-inconsistent and economically-insane policies pushed by extremists in the NC General Assembly.

"On Feb. 8, thousands will say to Gov. McCrory, Speaker Tillis, Senate Leader Berger and Budget Director Art Pope that they will not tolerate a government that protects the privileges of a wealthy few, a government that kicks people when they are down," Dr. Barber said.

The HKonJ pre-march services will begin at 9 am at Shaw University on Wilmington Stbetween South St and MLK Jr Blvd. The formal Moral March program will open at 9:30 am in the same location. At 10:30 am, all those gathered will proceed to march through Raleigh to the state capitol building, and the People's Assembly will commence at 11 am on Fayetteville St directly in front of the capitol.

More information about the event, scheduling and transportation can be found here. If your organization is getting together a bus or van to get to the march, please fill out theregistration form.

Letter Calling on Sen. Richard Burr to Stop Blocking a Vote on Ms. Jennifer May-Parker's Candidacy

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 29, 2014

NC NAACP Releases Letter Calling on Sen. Richard Burr to Stop Blocking a Vote on Ms. Jennifer May-Parker's Candidacy to Fill an Open Seat on the U.S. District Court for Eastern North Carolina

RALEIGH - The North Carolina NAACP released a letter today urging Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) to stop blocking the congressional confirmation vote of Ms. Jennifer May-Parker for the U.S. district court judgeship in Eastern North Carolina.

Reverend Dr. William J. Barber, II and the state conference also call upon the NC NAACP's partner organizations and other people of conscience to contact Sen. Burr and let him know that they oppose his continued efforts to obstruct the appointment of a well-qualified African-American attorney to the court seat.

"The North Carolina NAACP, the people of North Carolina, say today that we will never stand by as justice is delayed," Dr. Barber said on Jan. 25 when he announced the initiative. "Because justice delayed is justice denied."

Attorney May-Parker is presently the Chief of the Appellate Section of the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina where she directs that office's defense of criminal convictions before the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.

President Barack Obama nominated Ms. May-Parker, a well-respected U.S. attorney and an African American, in June for the judgeship, which has been vacant for eight years-longer than any other court vacancy nationwide. The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts has called the long-term opening in Eastern North Carolina a "judicial emergency."

The NC NAACP adds that a 220-year absence of any African American as a judge in the Eastern District of North Carolina constitutes a moral and constitutional emergency. If approved by Congress, Ms. May-Parker would be the first African American to hold the position in state history.

The 44 counties of the Eastern district, commonly referred to as the state's Black Belt, are home to the largest proportion of African Americans of any federal district. It is a region that has been wracked by the institutional injustices and racial discrimination of 200 years of chattel slavery and then another 100 years of sharecropping and Jim Crow.

"The federal court in the eastern district looks like the Civil Rights Movement never happened," Dr. Barber said. "Sen. Burr...stop denying the people of eastern North Carolina their right to have Ms. May-Parker's candidacy voted on and their right to integrate the courts, something that should have been done 200 years ago."

The NC NAACP is not demanding that Sen. Burr vote for Ms. May-Parker, merely that he stop his silent veto and allow her candidacy to move forward for a full Congressional vote. The letter asks him to "Please do the right thing... [and] lift the "Hold" that you have placed upon the nomination of Attorney Jennifer May-Parker."

On Jan. 24, the state conference's Executive Committee unanimously voted to use the strength of its 100+ adult, youth and college branches and its 160+ coalition partners to put pressure on Sen. Burr over this prolonged delay of justice.

Dr. Barber calls upon the NC NAACP members, the Forward Together Moral Movement partner organizations, and all North Carolinians to ask Sen. Burr to give Ms. May-Parker just the chance to be voted upon. Tell Sen. Burr to stop obstructing justice and to let democracy go forward by signing onto the letter or by calling and emailing his office.

It has been a long eight years for the Eastern district, and it has been an even longer 225 years for the African Americans seeking a fair chance in the federal courts.

A signed copy of the NC NAACP's letter to Sen. Burr is available here. Please see the contact information for Sen. Burr's office below.

RALEIGH - Hundreds of North Carolina NAACP members will meet in Raleigh on Saturday, January 25 at the organization's annual winter conference to push the organization's campaign against the state's immoral and unconstitutional legislative policies forward into 2014.

Youth and adult leaders will engage in a day of training and workshops centered on the critical issues of our time. They will be trained in voter mobilization and voting rights and how to continue to build and support this powerful movement growing in North Carolina.

"In 2014, North Carolina is on the front line in this nationwide struggle for equality, justice, and economic opportunity," Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II said. "And so this year, the winter conference theme is 'We Shall Not Be Moved: Holding on to Past Victories as the Fight for Equality and Justice Continues.' The NC NAACP will be ready to stand alongside the hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians who are ready to move forward together."

The conference will be held at Abundant Life Church of God in Christ & Life Center, located at 4400 Old Poole Rd. Raleigh, and the first events will kick off at 9:10 a.m. with a news conference.

Mrs. Lorraine C. Miller, the Interim President & CEO of the National NAACP, will address the conference during the Lunch Keynote Speech. Other speakers include Mr. Kevin Myles, Director of the NAACP Southeastern Region V, and Ms. Penda Hair, the nationally-acclaimed attorney and Advancement Project Co-Director. Ms. Hair and her team of lawyers help to represent the NC NAACP in the critical challenge to the state's unconstitutional voter-suppression law--a law that was pushed through the NC General Assembly in the first year after the U. S. Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

On Saturday evening, Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II will present the NC NAACP 2014 Humanitarians of the Year award to the over 100 volunteer attorneys who have given countless hours of their expertise and their services to represent the Moral Monday arrestees.

"I am pleased to announce the winners of our most prestigious award will be the scores of volunteer attorneys who are valiantly representing more than 940 of us in our struggle to vindicate our constitutional rights to peaceably petition the government for redress of our grievances," Dr. Barber said. "In making this fight, they breathe fresh oxygen into these fundamental rights for all of us."

Their steadfast work has opened a dialogue in North Carolina's courts and over its kitchen tables over what it means to participate in a democratic government. Just this week, a prosecutor dropped all charges against the arrestees in more than 50 cases.

At Saturday's banquet, the attorneys join the ranks of other renowned recipients, including Dr. John Hope Franklin, National Poet Laureate Dr. Maya Angelou, Governor Jim Hunt, and others who have championed the cause of human rights in North Carolina. Now in its 30th year, the annual Humanitarian of the Year banquet will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Abundant Life Church of God in Christ and Life Center. Doors open at 6:00 p.m.

Dr. Barber will present the award, on behalf of tens of thousands of members of the NC NAACP, the hundreds of thousands of members of the 160 partner-organizations who are part of the Forward Together Moral Movement and Historic Thousands on Jones Street People's Assembly Coalition, and the over 940 people who were arrested for exercising their constitutional rights during the Moral Monday demonstrations last year.

WTF: Flags on Sticks are more Dangerous than Guns..

What are they smoke or drinking at the Capital in Virginia??

From ThinkProgress.org,

What is the bigger risk inside a state capitol building: openly carrying an American flag or an assault rifle? In Virginia, capitol visitors can not bring American flags and signs affixed to sticks, because capitol security considers sticks a public threat. Firearms, however, are allowed.
