The President On Hurricane Sandy (official transcript)

THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release

October 28, 2012

REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT ON HURRICANE SANDY

FEMA Headquarters

Washington, D.C. 1:55 P.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT:  Well, good afternoon, everybody.  Obviously, all of us across the country are concerned about the potential impact of Hurricane Sandy.  This is a serious and big storm.  And my first message is to all the people across the Eastern seaboard, Mid-Atlantic, going north, that you need to take this very seriously and follow the instructions of your state and local officials, because they are going to be providing you with the best advice in terms of how to deal with this storm over the coming days.

We just had an excellent meeting with the FEMA team here, the various agencies that are in charge, including the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy and others that are going to need to respond very quickly.

Under Craig Fugate's leadership here at FEMA we've had a chance to talk to the regional officials as well.  And I just had a phone call with the governors of the potentially impacted states, as well as some of the major cities in the region.

At this stage, everybody is confident that the staging process, the prepositioning of resources, commodities, equipment that are going to be needed to respond to this storm are in place.  But as Craig has emphasized, this hasn't hit landfall yet, so we don't yet know where it's going to hit, where we're going to see the biggest impacts.  And that's exactly why it's so important for us to respond big and respond fast as local information starts coming in.

I want to thank all the members of the team for the outstanding work that they’re doing.  But the other thing that makes this storm unique is we anticipate that it is going to be slow moving.  That means that it may take a long time not only to clear, but also to get, for example, the power companies back in to clear trees and to put things back in place so that folks can start moving back home.

So my main message to everybody involved is that we have to take this seriously.  The federal government is working effectively with the state and local governments.  It’s going to be very important that populations in all the impacted states take this seriously, listen to your state and local elected officials.

My message to the governors, as well as to the mayors, is anything they need, we will be there.  And we’re going to cut through red tape.  We’re not going to get bogged down with a lot of rules.  We want to make sure that we are anticipating and leaning forward into making sure that we’ve got the best possible response to what is going to be a big and messy system.

So again, thank you, everybody.  Craig, would you like add to something?

MR. FUGATE:  Again, as the President says, it’s going to really come down to the public heeding those evacuation orders, taking protective measures.  If they haven’t gotten ready, they can go to Ready.gov.  Get information on how to protect them and their families, but also check on your neighbors.  This is going to be a big storm.  We need to be there for each other.

THE PRESIDENT:  Okay.  Let me emphasize that again -- Ready.gov -- for the general public.  If you need to know how to respond, that’s where you can get centralized information.

But I think Craig’s point is exactly right.  In times like this, one of the things that Americans do is we pull together and we help out one another.  And so, there may be elderly populations in your area.  Check on your neighbor, check on your friend.  Make sure that they are prepared.  If we do, then we’re going to get through this storm just fine.  But we’re going to have to make sure that we are vigilant, and vigilant for a couple of days.  Don’t anticipate that just because the immediate storm has passed that we’re not going to have some potential problems in a lot of these communities going forward through the week.

All right.  Thank you very much, everybody.

                                           END

Reselling your stuff make become illegal thanks to the Federal Court and the Supreme Court

Read about the case here, click
Are you in?  More than 3,000 sites -- including prominent allies like the Electronic Frontier Foundation -- have signed up to take part in today's day of action. The Supreme Court is hearing that case that will decide if you have the right to resell the things you own.
Ebay, Craigslist, and even the old-fashioned garage sale are under threat.
Sites will be using our ribbons and ball-and-chain icons to sound the alarm about the Kirtsaeng vs John Wiley & Sons case:
The Supreme Court might side with Big Business and decide that you don't have the right to resell things that were made abroad: books, clothes, iPhones -- almost anything.
If you're planning to take part, please click here to grab the code for one of those icons, and post it on your site! (And maybe write up a blurb about why you're taking a stand.)
Here's what it'll look like:

We expect to have a legislative fight on our hands come winter, no matter how the Supreme Court rules.  So we want to drive thousands of emails to lawmakers before Big Business sics its brigade of lobbyists on them.

Big Oil Buys a Congressman for the rock bottom price of 2.5 mil

big-oil-5On Friday, it was learned that Big Oil giant Chevron wrote a $2.5 million check directly to Speaker Boehner’s Super PAC. It’s likely the largest corporate donation in the history of Super PACs!

So I wonder what special requests come tried to the donation..

Dennis Morgan demands Ann Coulter to apologize for using the R-word (retarded).. Also Please Sign Petition

Dear-Ann-CoulterAs the father of a special needs son, I can't tell you how angry it makes me when people use the word "retard" in a derogatory manner. One of the worst offenders is Ann Coulter, who this week referred to President Obama as "the retard" on Twitter.

I'm a Republican, and I'm not voting for President Obama, but that doesn't matter. This isn't about Democrats or Republicans, it's about right and wrong. And calling anyone a "retard" or "retarded" is just plain wrong.

When Ann Coulter uses that word, she's telling bullies all over America that it's okay to make fun of special needs people like my son. Even worse, she's insinuating that my son is stupid or less human just because he has a disability.

I started a petition on Change.org demanding that Ann Coulter apologize and stop using this hateful word. Will you sign it?

When my son was born, the doctors said he had a 1% chance of living. He has been in and out of hospitals his whole life, and he has technically died several times. But Caleb is a fighter, and he always pulls through.

My son has fought to stay alive for twenty years. He deserves better than to be insulted by someone looking to score cheap political points.

I know that Ann Coulter just says things like this to get attention, and part of me doesn't want to give her any more. But the things she said this week were just too much for me. She needs to know that her words hurt parents like me and children like mine. If she wants attention, she needs to find some other way to get it.

Click here to demand that Ann Coulter apologize to the special needs community and stop using the words "retard" and "retarded."

Thank you,

Dennis Morgan

Brian Brown full of crap as usual.

Brain Obama doesn’t have the sole power to change or rewrite our Constitution..  You damn dumb ass..

"In just 10 days, you can change history. You could wake up the morning after the election to watch the shocked expression on the faces of all the pundits, the politicians, the out of control judges, and see the headlines: HISTORIC NATIONAL VICTORY FOR MARRIAGE! Just 10 days until the polls close, when America will choose. The future of our country—and also the future of marriage—could be decided for generations to come. Nationally, Americans will choose between Mitt Romney, a pro-marriage candidate for President who will defend DOMA and appoint judges that respect our Constitutional values; or the openly pro-gay marriage incumbent, Barack Obama, who has surreptitiously undermined the legal defense of marriage for four years and who, if he gets a second term, will have the power to position a fifth vote on the Supreme Court to invent a right to gay marriage and insert it in our founding document." - Hate group leader Brian Brown

Palin hits the books, and come up with this racist tweet..

PalinRacist
I still have to wonder if it was Palin are some poor intern work for her sorry butt..

Over at her Facebook page, they are fast blocking those who don’t agree with statements..

Palin comments about recently release emails.

We now know that the State Department sent an email to the White House, the Pentagon, the FBI and others in the intelligence community about this Islamist group claiming responsibility. And yet for days afterwards the White House and State Department led everyone to believe that the attack was the result of a spontaneous protest over an obscure YouTube video that had been uploaded months prior. Anywhere from 300 to 400 people from the administration and our intelligence community would have seen that email. Why the lies? Why the cover up? Why the dissembling about the cause of the murder of our ambassador on the anniversary of the worst terrorist attacks on American soil? We deserve answers to this. President Obama’s shuck and jive shtick with these Benghazi lies must end.

this is from a commenter on this above story,

Look what lying Ryan has done this time

A charity that operates a soup kitchen in northeastern Ohio has faced an exodus of donors ever since vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan staged a photo-op on the premises.

“It appears to be a substantial amount,” Brian Antal, president of the Mahoning County St. Vincent De Paul Society in Youngstown, told The Huffington Post. “You can rest assured there has been a substantial backlash.”

however if you like you can help to fix this,

We urge all city voters to vote "no" on this referendum."

DOMA Unconstitutional

Via press release from the ACLU:

A federal appeals court ruled today that the so-called “Defense of Marriage Act” (DOMA) unconstitutionally discriminates against married same-sex couples. In striking down DOMA, the court held that government discrimination against lesbians and gay men now is assumed to be unconstitutional and that DOMA’s defenders could not offer any good reason for treating married same-sex couples differently from all other married couples. This is the first federal appeals court decision to decide that government discrimination against gay people gets a more exacting level of judicial review, known as “heightened scrutiny.”
The law had been challenged by Edith “Edie” Windsor, who sued the federal government for failing to recognize her marriage to her partner Thea Spyer, after Spyer’s death in 2009. Windsor and Spyer, who were a couple for 44 years, were married in Canada in 2007, and were considered married by their home state of New York. “This law violated the fundamental American principle of fairness that we all cherish,” said Windsor. “I know Thea would have been so proud to see how far we have come in our fight to be treated with dignity.”
In her lawsuit, Windsor argued that DOMA violates the equal protection guarantee of the U.S. Constitution because it requires the government to treat same-sex couples who are legally married as strangers. Windsor's lawsuit was filed by the law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, the American Civil Liberties Union and the New York Civil Liberties Union.
Key passage from the ruling: "In this case, all four factors justify heightened scrutiny: A) homosexuals as a group have historically endured persecution and discrimination; B) homosexuality has no relation to aptitude or ability to contribute to society; C) homosexuals are a discernible group with non-obvious distinguishing characteristics, especially in the subset of those who enter same-sex marriages; and D) the class remains a politically weakened minority."
Yet another domino falls! View the ruling here or below.

Chris Barron on Ann Coulter comments about being disowned for being gay

GLAAD denounced Ann Coulter's tweet making fun of gay kids who get disowned by their parents.  Today, as he does every time GLAAD is mentioned, GOProud's Chris Barron responded.  Via the Advocate:

ChrisBarronHSGOProud cofounder Christopher Barron, however, told The Advocate on Wednesday, that GLAAD was overreacting to the author's joke. He added that he knows Coulter personally, and that she "has been a strong ally of gay conservatives. Indeed, Ann has gone into the lion's den at places like CPAC to make the case that gay people should be welcomed in the conservative movement. The criticism of Ann by an organization like GLAAD is laughable."

Gay men Body Standards, so true

Duke student Jacob Tobia has wrote a great commentary about Gay men body image and self-esteem. this is a great read..

Here is an interesting piece:

Isn’t it ironic that in the course of my life, the most traumatic factors affecting my self-esteem have been the standards imposed on my body by the gay community? It’s no wonder that a study at Columbia University found that gay men are three times more likely to have an eating disorder than their heterosexual counterparts.

ORANGE COUNTY, NC (October 8, 2012)—The  Orange County Human Relations Commission is hosting a Community READ and inviting book clubs and reading groups in Orange County to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation.

New Jersey might follow California ban on "ex-gay" therapy for minors

New Jersey Assemblyman Tim Eustace says he will introduce a bill similar to California's ban on "ex-gay" therapy for minors.

"I see it as a form of child abuse," Eustace said. Being gay "is not an illness, so what are they fixing?" "Conversion" or "reparative" therapy has been discredited by all major mental health organizations, according to the American Psychological Association. Since parents may force their children to undergo the therapy, the state should protect them, Eustace said. The bills will face stiff resistance from the New Jersey Family Policy Council, a group that opposes gay marriage. Government should not interfere with parental decisions, said the group's founder and president, Len Deo. "The American Psychological Association has been very 'progressive' in their viewpoints. I would say there are thousands who have have utilized this therapy that have left the gay lifestyle," he said. "Assemblyman Eustace now becomes the parental authority for all . . . kids? Give me a break," Deo added. "A kid can't get a tattoo in New Jersey without a parent's consent. To take the flip side on this and take away the right of the parents on this issue is ludicrous."

Sally Quinn: is full of it, claims Atheism is Un-American

I guess she forgets that freedom of religion is also freedom from religion too.

SallyQuinn"This is a religious country. Part of claiming your citizenship is claiming a belief in God, even if you are not Christian. We’ve got the Creator in our Declaration of Independence. We’ve got 'In God We Trust' on our coins. We’ve got 'one nation under God' in our Pledge of Allegiance. And we say prayers in the Senate and the House of Representatives to God. An atheist could never get elected dog catcher, much less president. (Democratic Rep. Pete Stark of California is a non-atheist but doesn’t talk much about it). Up until now, the idea of being American and believing in God were synonymous. [snip] If Obama wants to win the next debate, he needs to wear God, as much as it offends him to do so."

Obama Memo what to expect in tonight’s debate

To read the memo see below or click here: http://bit.ly/PPfZuk

Stephanie Cutter on tonight’s debate

To watch the web video click here: http://bit.ly/Spfdt3

MEMORANDUM TO INTERESTED PARTIES

TO:                 Interested Parties

FROM:           Stephanie Cutter, Obama for America Deputy Campaign Manager

SUBJECT:    What to Expect in Tonight’s Debate

Tonight, the President and Mitt Romney will debate each other for the first time. Both sides have worked to set expectations on their candidates – from the amount of time the candidates have spent preparing, to the number of “zingers” Mitt Romney has memorized.

But, the American people aren’t going to pick the winner of this debate based on style or good attack lines. If they were, then the Republican Convention’s “empty chair” moment should have been a great success.

Instead, they’re going to pick the winner on substance.   They’re looking for the candidates to lay out specific, concrete policies to move this country forward, not back to the same policies that created the crisis in the first place and punished the middle class.  Tonight provides an opportunity for both President Obama and Mitt Romney to do that.

The President looks forward to that conversation – because it’s one he started six years ago and has continued ever since. In taking emergency steps to save the economy from another depression, rescuing the auto industry, reforming health insurance, putting new rules in place for Wall Street, cutting taxes for small businesses and the middle class and helping more Americans afford a college education and pay their mortgages, the President has made real and significant progress with one goal in mind: to restore middle class security. We’ve now had 30 straight months of private-sector job growth, during which businesses have created 5.1 million jobs.

For the next four years, President Obama has laid out real and achievable goals, and a specific path to get there, restoring middle-class security and creating jobs and long-term economic growth.

Mitt Romney comes to this debate in a different position. He doesn’t have any specific plans to move us forward – only tired repeats that will take us back. On job creation, deficit reduction, and the middle class, Romney’s promises are nothing more than platitudes covering up a collection of contradictory positions.  In short, they aren’t serious steps to move our country forward.   So, Romney can use tonight’s debate to fill in those details and finally, for the first time, explain his proposals or readjust his positions. Or he can spend 90 minutes doing what he does best: attacking the president, distorting his own record, and avoiding any and all details on his plans for this country.

Michele Bachmann knows how to clear out a Chicago Synagogue, they leave and donate to her Opponent

Delicious:

"The holiness of the room and the holiness of the evening was greatly diminished for me, if not completely destroyed," said Gary Sircus, who stormed out of the synagogue where he has observed the High Holidays for 25 years. "Our congregation values and embodies tolerance, compassion, respect for individual rights, intelligence, science — all of the things that I think Michele Bachmann stands against." Later that night, he composed an email to Graves' campaign and sent it to others, urging them to donate. His words have since gone viral. "I felt that the best way to 'honor' Ms. Bachmann's visit was to make a contribution to your campaign," Sircus wrote. "Even though I do not vote in Minnesota, please do everything in your power to take away this evil woman's soapbox."

NC NAACP and Denominational Leaders Gather to Announce the

69th Annual NC NAACP State Convention Under the Theme:

"If We Ever Needed to Vote, We Sure Do Need to Vote Now"

RALEIGH - Exactly 10 days before the regular voter registration deadline, the president and other officers of the North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP will join African-American church denominational leaders, representing thousands of churches in North Carolina, to speak with one voice calling for mass voter mobilization and announcing the 69th Annual NC NAACP State Convention in Raleigh this year.

The news conference will take place on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at 12:00 PM outside the NC State Capitol on the Morgan Street to the south of the Capitol.

The NC NAACP State Convention, which will take place Oct. 11-13 in Raleigh, will be entirely focused on voter education, voter protection and voter mobilization for Get-Out-The-Vote. The General State Baptist Convention, the Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention and the AME Zion Church will be in attendance at the news conference.

"When we look at the scale and scope of this election, the fact that we will be electing the President, the Governor, every member of the NC General Assembly, US Representatives in addition to county commissioners, town council members, school board members and judges across the state, the civil rights and faith communities cannot take one vote for granted," said Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, president of the NC NAACP. "In light of the weighty matters before us and how our elected officials will address poverty, jobs and labor rights, educational equality, healthcare for all, continuing disparities in the criminal justice system and the deep concerns now around voting rights and defending democracy, the North Carolina NAACP's message will be 'If We Ever Needed To Vote, We Sure Do Need To Vote Now!'"

At the news conference the NC NAACP will lay out a strategy on how it will use the Convention to push through early voting and election day with a strong, coordinated and grassroots campaign girded by its 125 local branches, 140+ HKonJ Coalition partners and the African-American Church. During the news conference, the NC NAACP will also announce partnership with legal voter protection groups as well.

"While strictly nonpartisan, the NAACP and these historic African-American denominations believe that the issues of poverty, educational equality, voting rights, healthcare and labor rights ought to be at the center of the political agenda," Rev. Barber continued. "We should use candidates' stances on these issues to discern whom to support electorally."

NOM is Pissed. they must release records

Today the Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal from a national anti-gay marriage group that tried to thwart Maine’s campaign disclosure law requiring it to release its donor list.

The high court on Monday turned aside an appeal from the National Organization for Marriage, which donated $1.9 million to a political action committee that helped repeal Maine’s same-sex marriage law. Maine’s campaign disclosure law requires groups that raise or spend more than $5,000 to influence elections to register and disclose their donors. The group says that it believes that releasing the donor list would stymie free speech, but the lower court refused to throw out the law.

Ok, Brian and Maggie where are those records.. Release them Now, since you have no more courts to run to..
