Professional Groups that Oppose NC Amendment 1

Via press release:

At a press conference held Wednesday, April 25, at the North Carolina General Assembly, representatives from the North Carolina Pediatric Society joined with colleagues from the North Carolina Psychological Association, the North Carolina Psychiatric Association, National Association of Social Workers, North Carolina Chapter and the Carolinas Chapter of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists in opposing Amendment One, the proposed amendment to the North Carolina Constitution that would ban relationship recognitions and threaten protections for the state’s unmarried couples.

Tami is Getting worry, that they might lose this Marriage Fight..

Dear Marriage Supporter,

We could lose on May 8 if we fail to counter the opposition’s deceitful TV ads.

The opposition is basing their ads on falsehoods. And they’re running those ads twice as many times as we are running ours. The reason? They have more money.

We need your help to spread the truth about the Marriage Protection Amendment across North Carolina—and we must have your financial support in order to refute the opposition’s campaign of deception.

Many strong conservatives say that we do not need television advertisements to win on May 8. But that is simply not the case. Public Policy Polling released a poll today that showed that support for the Amendment is down since March.  In fact, they said that “Momentum is turning against North Carolina’s proposed marriage amendment.” We must get the facts straight about the Amendment so that voters remain strong on marriage and head to the polls in droves to vote FOR the Marriage Protection Amendment on May 8.

There are only two weeks left until the final votes are cast on the Marriage Protection Amendment—will you help us preserve marriage in North Carolina from activists who want to redefine marriage for all of us?

We need your support now more than ever before, so we can put more of our ads on television to counter the deceptive ads of our opponents.  Don’t be one of those marriage supporters who is willing to risk losing this important issue just because you think the Amendment will pass no matter what our opponents do.  I urge you to donate now to ensure that marriage remains between one man and one woman in North Carolina.

Sincerely,

Tami Fitzgerald

VoteforMarriageNC cuts Budget for Ads

Via Email from NOM,

And the North Carolina campaign doesn't have the resources to respond.

Tami Fitzgerald, head of Vote for Marriage NC, tells me that they have had to cut their advertising budget by two-thirds simply because they don't have the money...and that the pro-SSM forces in North Carolina have just placed a television schedule that will outnumber pro-marriage ads 3 to 1.

I am asking each of us to dig deep and do whatever you can to help protect marriage in North Carolina right now. Please click here to give directly to the North Carolina campaign.

No matter how much you can afford, it is absolutely critical that you take immediate action!

North Carolina NAACP to host media briefing with activists, bill sponsors and attorneys for full examination of Judge Gregory Weeks' Racial Justice Act ruling

(DURHAM) On Monday, April 23, 2012, the North Carolina NAACP will be joined by activists, bill sponsors and attorneys representing Marcus Robinson and other death row inmates who have filed claims under the Racial Justice Act, and others who have participated in the struggle to pass and defend the Racial Justice Act, for a media briefing and full examination of Judge Weeks' ruling on Friday.

The media briefing will take place at 9:00 AM in the North Carolina Institute for Minority Economic Development (NCIMED) Building at 114 W. Parrish Street, 4th Floor, Durham, NC.

"Friday's decision by Judge Weeks was a direct challenge to the racially-biased practice of capital punishment and a criminal justice system that is far too often tainted and affected by this bias in arrests, convictions and sentencing," said Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, President of the North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP. "The Racial Justice Act and Friday's decision serve as a breath of new life into our Constitution's promise to equal protection under the law for all persons. Unlike the McCleskey decision, North Carolina should never be afraid of too much justice."

Dr. Barber continued, "Through the passage of the Racial Justice Act, North Carolina made a commitment to eradicating racial bias in our capital punishment process. We should not be ashamed or afraid to root out every vestige of hatred and oppression, covert or overt, implicit or explicit, in our 21st century criminal justice system."

NC NAACP and Partners to Hold News Conference Following First Racial Justice Act Ruling

(DURHAM) - Superior Court Judge Gregory Weeks will announce his ruling in the first North Carolina Racial Justice Act case, State of NC v. Marcus Robinson, at 10:00 am, Friday, April 20, 2012, at the Cumberland County Courthouse. Immediately following the ruling, a press conference will be held with Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, President of the NC NAACP, Darryl Hunt, an exoneree from Winston-Salem and founder of the Darryl Hunt Project for Freedom and Justice and other members of the NC Coalition for a Moratorium.

This ruling is the culmination of the first hearing under the two-year-old groundbreaking Racial Justice Act (RJA). On Friday, Marcus Robinson becomes the first death row inmate to have a judge determine whether race played a role in his death sentence under this new legislation.

The Racial Justice Act's sole purpose is to attempt to ensure race does not play a role in the application of a death sentence. The RJA is recognized nationally as the most progressive death penalty legislation in the South.

Featuring a Candidates Forum for Governor and Lieutenant Governor

On Saturday, April 21, 2012 the North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP will bring grassroots leaders from its branches across the state to Durham for a Spring Meeting filled with workshops, presentations, a Unity Session, a Candidate's Forum and the 28th Annual Humanitarian Awards Banquet. Alston St. Durham, NC and the Humanitarian Awards Banquet will take place at the Durham Convention Center, 201 Foster Street, Durham, NC, beginning at 7:00 PM. Doors open at 6:30 PM

"The gathering could not come at a more critical time in North Carolina," said Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, President of the NC NAACP. "After examining data and public policy, the North Carolina NAACP renders the opinion that North Carolina is in a State of Emergency when it comes to public education funding, poverty and jobs, equal protection under the law, injustices in the criminal justice system, access to healthcare, protection of civil and constitutional rights, environmental protection and immigrant rights for many North Carolinians. Civic engagement is of paramount importance and the NC NAACP Spring Meeting is a major event to continue to expand participation in our democracy, which is critical for this state to choose a better way."

The day will open with a Unity Session and Call to Action by Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II at 9:00 AM. Rev. Dr. Barber will discuss the current political landscape and the State of Emergency in North Carolina.

News Alert - NC A&T and Winston-Salem State University Invite NC NAACP President to Speak at Campus Rallies Today

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 17, 2012

For More Information:           Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, President, 919-394-8137

Mrs. Amina J. Turner, Executive Drector, 919-682-4700

For Media Assistance:            Rob Stephens, 336-577-9335

(DURHAM) -  Two Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU's) are holding rallies today against Voter Suppression, Amendment One and the rightwing attack on African-Americans, Latinos, the elderly, women, students, the poor, and other minorities. The campus groups, led by NAACP college chapters on the campuses of Winston-Salem State University and North Carolina A&T University are helping to lead these efforts and have invited Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, President of the North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP, to speak.

Both events are scheduled for today, Tuesday, April 17, 2012. The "Rally for a Revolution" on the campus of Winston-Salem State University will take place at 2:30 PM at the Clock Tower.  Please contact Brandon Singletary for on-site coordination - 910-581-9864.

The "Join the Revolution Rally" at NC A&T University is organized in conjunction with five campuses in Greensboro: Bennett College, UNC-Greensboro, Guilford College and Greensboro College. It will take place at 5:15 PM behind the Student Union on the Quad, 1405 John Mitchell Drive, Greensboro, NC. Please contact William Robinson for on-site coordination - 828-261-5552.

"Young people are not being fooled by the rightwing's attempt to divide and conquer the current day Civil Rights Movement," said Rev. Barber. "They know passing the first amendment that codifies discrimination into the North Carolina Constitution is part of a strategic plan to strip the rights of a new, more diverse North Carolina in order to maintain power in the hands of the few. As students on campuses where sit-ins sparked a wave of student movements across the country against all forms of discrimination, they know it is especially concerning in a Southern State for powers to set a precedent whereby a majority votes on the rights of a minority in an attempt to move toward a limited states rights agenda as a way of undermining the broad protections of our Constitution."

NC NAACP: Zimmerman is Arrested today, but the work to Arrest racial profiling and racial injustice in the legal system continues tomorrow

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 11, 2012

For More Information:     Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, President, 919-394-8137

Mrs. Amina J. Turner,  Executive Director, 919-682-4700

Zimmerman is Arrested today, but the work to Arrest racial profiling and racial injustice in the legal system continues tomorrow

Tonight was an important beginning with the arrest and second degree murder charge against George Zimmerman for the death of Trayvon Martin. It begins what we have wanted in the Civil Rights Community: an arrest and a fair and open trial based on the facts. It begins the process of restoring some faith and hope that justice will be blind and our legal system will be impartial.

But while it is a beginning, it is not an end. It should not be an end to our prayers for Trayvon's family. It should not be an end to us remembering that an innocent teenager was racially profiled for wearing a hoodie and "carrying skittles while black" with deadly consequences. Trayvon, who could have been any of our sons, is dead. It should not be an end to our following or monitoring this case. While Zimmerman has been arrested, it certainly doesn't put an end to the racial profiling and racial application of arrests, prosecutions and imprisonment in our communities. Rather, now more than ever, racial profiling must be challenged by an ongoing Movement that demands respect, raises a moral outcry and registers our position politically through the electoral process in ways that continue to challenge systemic injustice.

A Bit of this and a Bit of that

sdfWell it would seem that someone has pissed in Brian Brown, (head of NOM) Coffee sometime this week. It would seem that HRC has some tax returns from NOM with a list of their donors..

Brown, personal take:6a00d8341c730253ef0168e9b09508970c-800wi

It appears that someone with either the IRS or the HRC may have committed a federal crime by illegally obtaining and then releasing a confidential tax return of the National Organization for Marriage.
It's clear that the tax return was stolen, either from NOM or from the government. The Huffington Post article says that HRC claimed they received the document from a ‘whistleblower.' But the term ‘whistleblower' is completely inapt. We're talking about a criminal who has stolen confidential tax return information. We demand to know who this criminal is, whether they work for the HRC or the IRS, and how they obtained confidential tax information filed only with the US government."
I would like to know what the HRC knew and when did they know it. It certainly appears that either the HRC was involved in illegally obtaining this tax return themselves, or they worked with a criminal who stole it from NOM or the IRS. Either way, it appears that a federal crime may have been committed
