Statement from the President

THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 21, 2015

Statement from the President

Our democracy works best when everyone’s voice is heard, and no one’s voice is drowned out. But five years ago, a Supreme Court ruling allowed big companies – including foreign corporations – to spend unlimited amounts of money to influence our elections. The Citizens United decision was wrong, and it has caused real harm to our democracy. With each new campaign season, this dark money floods our airwaves with more and more political ads that pull our politics into the gutter. It’s time to reverse this trend. Rather than bolster the power of lobbyists and special interests, Washington should lift up the voices of ordinary Americans and protect their democratic right to determine the direction of the country that we love.

Thom Tillis proves he is for Big Business only

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Tuesday Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) announced that he is co-sponsoring the Forty Hours Is Full Time Act, S.30, to require the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to define a “full-time employee” as someone who works 40 hours per week, not 30 hours per week as currently defined by the IRS under President Obama’s Affordable Care Act.  This 30 hour definition has forced many employers to cut work schedules for many workers in North Carolina in order to keep up with the costs of the President’s health care law.

“We’ve said all along North Carolina voters deserve to have their voices heard, and this important issue won’t ever be settled until a final decision is made by the U.S. Supreme Court,” said Senate Leader Phil Berger (R-Rockingham).  “Today’s petition is the most efficient and cost-effective way to reach a final resolution.”

“Regardless of where you stand on the ultimate issue, it is important to protect the will of the North Carolina voters who overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment,” said House Speaker-Designee Tim Moore (R-Cleveland).

NC NAACP to Honor Shaw University with Humanitarian of the Year Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 13, 2015

NC NAACP to Honor Shaw University with Humanitarian of the Year Award
at 31st Annual Humanitarian Awards Banquet

RALEIGH, NC: The North Carolina NAACP will honor Shaw University and the leadership of Dr. Gaddis Faulcon with its Humanitarian of the Year award on January 24, 2015. The award will be presented to Dr. Faulcon at the NC NAACP's 31st Annual Humanitarian Awards Banquet, at the Abundant Life Christian Center in Raleigh.

Shaw is the oldest Historically Black University in the South. It was founded in 1865, when millions of chattel slaves were transformed into both human beings and citizens by the United States putting down the rebellion of the slave owners who controlled southern legislatures and militias. Dr. Henry Martin Tupper founded Shaw to provide literacy training (under the sin and system of slavery, it was a crime to teach slaves to read and write), the study of the Bible and minister training, and the study of the educational process and teacher training.

For 150 years, Shaw has dedicated itself to engaging young leaders in the struggles for social justice and civil and human rights. It is the birthplace of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and the meeting location for numerous civil rights strategic planning sessions that have been instrumental in advancing civil rights in North Carolina and throughout the United States.

"This is the birthplace wherever you talk about higher education and leadership in the African American heritage," said Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II at the university's Founder's Day Convocation in October. "Shaw is our mother."

"We do not recognize Shaw just for its legacy, what it has done in decades past; we recognize Shaw for it does today, under Dr. Faulcon's leadership, to train, inspire, educate and nurture student activists. Shaw leads by example. We are honored to bestow this noble award on our mother university -- Shaw," said Rev. Dr. Barber.

The Humanitarian Award banquet will be held on January 24, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. (doors open at 6:00 p.m.) at the Abundant Life Christian Center located at 4400 Old Poole Road in Raleigh.
