RALEIGH, NC - Standing alongside moral witnesses from the Tillis 15, the North Carolina NAACP and the Forward Together Moral Movement announced that we will return to the General Assembly for Moral Monday on June 2 to petition our lawmakers to make a serious commitment to protecting the health of our people and our environment.

"Our General Assembly continues to pass bad policy after bad policy without regard to the people whose health they are damaging," said Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, president of the North Carolina NAACP. "This week, Speaker Thom Tillis, Senate Leader Phil Berger, Gov. Pat McCrory and their extremist colleagues put corporate interests ahead of real people when they rammed through an end to the moratorium on fracking in our state. They put corporate interests ahead of real people when they proposed a budget that takes vital Medicaid support from the elderly and the disabled. We will be back on Monday and we will be back every Monday of this short session until this General Assembly listens to the People's call to repent, repeal and restore confidence in our government."

At Moral Monday, environmental and health care experts, moral leaders and everyday North Carolinians who have been impacted will take the stage to make a strong case for the need to repeal these bad laws and policies.

The Forward Together Moral Movement will call upon the General Assembly to stop denying health care access to 500,000 North Carolinians by expanding Medicaid and to preserve health insurance coverage for thousands more by supporting the Affordable Care Act. We will also stand up for the health of our environment and for the low-income and minority communities that tend to bear the brunt of exposure to toxic pollution by asking our legislators to repeal the "fast-track" fracking bill and to pass a substantial plan for cleaning up coal ash.

Members of the media are invited to a pre-rally press conference at 4 pm in Pullen Memorial Baptist Church, located at 1801 Hillsborough St. After the press conference, we will make our way down to Halifax Mall for the Moral Monday rally and action beginning at 5 pm.

ORANGE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY TO EXHIBIT LOCAL ARTIST MARNIE BLUM

ORANGE COUNTY, NC (May 30, 2014)—The Orange County Public Library (OCPL) Main Library will host a 22-piece exhibition by artist Marnie Blum. The artwork will be displayed in Hillsborough from June 1 through August 1.

The collection of mixed-media art focuses on the universal human experiences of the desire for connection, the reality of separation, and the undying hope of the human spirit.

Blum believes people are made of many layers and she reflects that in her layered work, creating symbolic and abstract depictions meant to evoke emotions and conversations from viewers.

"Each piece I create focuses on the complexity of human nature, relationships and emotions," says Blum. "And while each piece has a story built into its making, it is through the lens of the viewer's personal experience that the story truly unfolds."

Blum is an emerging artist who works primarily in water-based media (acrylics, inks, water-soluble crayons) but also incorporates clay, fibers, paper, and writings; she uses whatever she has in her studio to achieve the desired effect.  She also explores expression through photography, drawing and design. Blum's art, like her life, is driven by instinct and intuition.

She resides in Wake Forest, NC, and maintains an online presence atwww.MarnieJBlum.com

The Orange County Public Library is committed to supporting the arts, sharing ideas and strengthening the Orange County community through the regular exhibition of local artwork. Each spring, the Main Library displays artwork from the Orange County Schools, as well as four to five additional juried exhibitions throughout the year.

DURHAM, NC - The North Carolina NAACP, the Forward Together Moral Movement and moral witnesses from the 'Tillis 15' will discuss this week's sit-in action in Speaker's Thom Tillis's office, as well as preview our plans for the next Moral Monday at a press conference this morning. On Monday, June 2, we will return to the General Assembly to call upon our lawmakers to make a serious commitment to environmental justice and the health of all North Carolinians.

"The moral witnesses in the 'Tillis 15' emphasized the real-life impact of extreme laws rammed through during the last legislative session," said Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, president of the North Carolina NAACP. "North Carolinians who have been hurt by these policies exercised their constitutionally protected right to petition Speaker Tillis for repeal. Under Article XI, Section 4 of the state constitution, "beneficent provision for the poor, the unfortunate, and the orphan is one of the first duties of a civilized and Christian state.' Speaker Tillis' and Senate Leader Berger's policies have broken with this fundamental principle of governance. This Monday in Raleigh, we will join together once again to remind them that their moral responsibility to care for the least of these calls upon them to stand up for environmental justice and for health care access for all North Carolinians."

The Forward Together Moral Movement will return to Raleigh on Monday, June 2, 2014 to continue its campaign for repeal by asking that the General Assembly take active steps to protect the health of North Carolina's people and its environment.

The moral witnesses were arrested Wednesday morning after sitting in Speaker Tillis' office for upwards of 10 hours, attempting to petition him to repeal the policies that are hurting them and their neighbors directly.

Halifax Mall (behind the General Assembly)

16 West Jones St, Raleigh, NC 27601

DURHAM, NC - The North Carolina NAACP and the Forward Together Moral Movement will return to the People's House today, Tuesday, May 27 to lobby our lawmakers directly to repent for the harm inflicted by their ideological choices, to repeal these extreme laws that are hurting our state's most vulnerable and to restore our confidence in their capacity to govern for the good of the whole.

"Today, we will go into the People's House ready to make our voices heard on behalf of thousands of North Carolinians," said Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, president of the North Carolina NAACP. "By visiting each and every state legislator in person, we hope to remind them that their political choices are more than just policy debates - they are hurting real people."

At the Forward Together Moral Movement People's Lobby & Advocacy Day, grassroots volunteer lobbyists from across North Carolina will visit state legislators to advocate for returning public policy to the moral center - particularly for the expansion of Medicaid, the restoration of the Earned Income Tax Credit, the extension of unemployment benefits, increased support for teachers and public schools, stronger environmental regulation around coal ash and a fair tax code that does not give huge windfalls to the wealthy and corporations, only to overburden the working poor.

Prior to the lobbying session, movement supporters will attend a policy briefing by scholars and experts so as to better understand the tremendous benefits North Carolinians could gain if state lawmakers were to repeal and reverse these extreme policies.

The schedule for tomorrow's Forward Together Moral Movement People's Lobby & Advocacy Day is below:

12:15 - Media are encouraged to arrive to set up

12:30 - Opening remarks by Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, on Halifax Mall

12:40 - Policy briefing by scholars (see full list below)

1:00 - "Moral Foundations for Public Policy: Bible and Prayer Study" hosted for legislators by clergy members in Room 1425 in the General Assembly Building

1:50 - Question and answer session on lobbying strategies

2:00 - Break into small teams, receive lobbying materials and move to the General Assembly

2:30 - Lobbying teams visit legislators in their offices to advocate for repeal

Legislative Alert! Help Repeal a Jim Crow Law in Durham County

Since 1935, Durham County, to its shame, is the ONLY county in North Carolina to still have on its books the Jim Crow legacy law designed to restrict the ability of African Americans to defend themselves.

Last year, Senator Mike Woodard took a brave step forward to support the Civil Rights of African Americans and the Second Amendment Constitutional Rights of all Americans living in Durham County. Mike introduced Senate Bill 226 which would repeal this Jim Crow legacy law. The bill passed the NC Senate and was actually placed on the House calendar for a vote. Without explanation the bill was pulled from the calendar and sent to the rules committee where it remains today.

Right now, one man stands in the way of this bill being passed-- Representative Tim Moore, Chairman of the House Rules Committee.

On May 14th, 2014, opening day of the legislative short session, Tim Moore told representatives of Grass Roots North Carolina that he would get this bill out of committee and onto the floor within the next week. So far no action has been taken and his legislative assistant told GRNC there was a "reason" the bill did not move out of committee. That "reason" is unknown at this time.

Please call, write, e-mail, personally show up at his office or do whatever you can to inform Representative Tim Moore that it is time to pass SB226 and put this Jim Crow legacy law behind us. We only have a few weeks in this legislative short session to get this bill passed.

Contact Representative Tim Moore at Tim.Moore@ncleg.net, 919-733-4838, NC House of Representatives, 16 W Jones Street, Room 2301, Raleigh, NC 27601-1096 and 704-739-1221, 305 East King St., Kings Mountain, NC 28086.

Thank you,

Paul Daniel

The North Carolina NAACP and the Forward Together Moral Movement to Appeal Directly to Legislators for Repeal of Extreme Laws at People's Lobby & Advocacy Day

Tuesday, May 27, 2014

12:30 pm

Halifax Mall (behind the General Assembly)

16 West Jones St, Raleigh, NC 27601

Included: A new video release on May 19's Moral Monday.

DURHAM, NC - The North Carolina NAACP and the Forward Together Moral Movement will return to the People's House this Tuesday, May 27 to lobby our lawmakers directly to repent for the harm inflicted by their ideological choices, to repeal these extreme laws that are hurting our state's most vulnerable and to restore our confidence in their capacity to govern for the good of the whole.

"Last Monday, we entered the General Assembly with tape over our mouths to dramatize Speaker Thom Tillis's and Senate Leader Phil Berger's tyrannical attempt to silence public petitions in the People's House," said Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, president of the NC NAACP. "We said it then, and we will say it again, that was the last time we will be silent when our brothers and sisters are suffering under these extreme policies and laws. This Tuesday, we will go into the People's House ready to make our voices heard on behalf of thousands of North Carolinians. By visiting each and every North Carolina legislator in person, we hope to remind them that their political choices are more than just policy debates - they are hurting real people."

At the People's Lobby & Advocacy Day, volunteer lobbyists will gather at 12:30 pm on Halifax Mall behind the General Assembly building to listen to a policy briefing from scholars and to receive advocacy instructions. The assembled will break into smaller lobbying teams around 2:30 pm and head into the General Assembly to visit the offices of our state legislators to advocate for repeal.

Also at 1:00 pm, members of the clergy will hold a program for lawmakers entitled: "Moral Foundations for Public Policy: Bible and Prayer Study" in the General Assembly for those interested in discussing the social mandates instrumental to our faith traditions. Information on the specific room for the Bible and Prayer Study will be forthcoming.
