DURHAM, NC - The North Carolina NAACP and the Forward Together Moral Movement are standing with workers from across the state this Labor Day as they speak up for labor unions and workers' protections on the day that bears their name. In partnership with the NC AFL-CIO, the NC NAACP will be taking Moral Monday on the road on Monday, Sept. 1 for a three-city tour, starting in Raleigh, stopping in Greensboro and culminating in a mass rally in Charlotte.

After a weekend of more than 30 "Labor Sabbath" worship services in which people of faith will have spoken up for labor unions, a fast food worker with Raise Up for 15 will join a worker from Mountaire Farms - where the largest unionization campaign in North Carolina of 2,000 poultry workers is currently underway - for a press conference in Raleigh's Nash Square at 9 am. With them will stand Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, president of the NC NAACP; NC AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer MaryBe McMillan; Rev. Spencer Bradford, Executive Director of Durham Congregations in Action; and Rev. Portia Rochelle, President of the Raleigh/Apex NAACP.

Once in Charlotte, the Forward Together Movement will hold a Moral Monday - Labor Day mass rally at 5:30 pm in Marshall Park to lift up workers' voices and hear from moral leaders on why North Carolina needs to embrace its working people by passing laws that support their livelihoods and their families.

"While we honors our workers on Labor Day, we cannot ignore the policies and laws passed down from this North Carolina General Assembly that are attacking poor and working families," said Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, president of the NC NAACP. "We believe North Carolinians who work 40 hours each week should be able to put food on their tables and buy school clothes for their children. The long fight for labor rights, for voting rights, for educational equality and for quality health care for all is not a fight between Republican and Democrat. It is a moral fight for the soul of the nation. That is why we are making this Labor Day a Moral Monday."

Dr. Barber will ride beside the NC AFL-CIO members and workers on the #TalkUnion caravan to draw attention to the devastating attacks that the North Carolina state legislature has waged on working families, low-wage workers, the poor and the unemployed. In Greensboro, the caravan will hold another press conference at the Beloved Community Center before picking up more supporters and advocates for the trip to Charlotte.
