We ARE Family.
And that's the real bonus about being a part of this LGBT community, as a member or an ally. We may sometimes disagree, but in the end, we're in it for each other.
That was especially true this week, as so many of you came together to kick off Equality NC's canvassing campaign, when your statewide LGBT organization put boots on the ground in NC neighborhoods, leading a community canvass to activate LGBT supporters and educate local constituents on the harms of the anti-LGBT constitutional amendment.
Check out this amazing group of organizers and volunteers spurring conversations with key constituents, including first-time canvasser Donita Brady who said, "my feelings coming away from this experience can be described in two words: empowered and hopeful!" To join them, e-mail Josh@equalitync.org.
Which reminds me, pretty soon our awesome new Director of Organizing, Sam Parker, who will be based in the key city of Charlotte, will be taking the helm of this newly-energized statewide organizing presence. This accomplished advocate from Maine will further broaden our pro-LGBT (and anti-amendment) reach throughout North Carolina. Please join me in welcoming Sam!
And speaking of the Queen City, with news that the anti-LGBT constitutional amendment will likely be brought to a vote in a special September legislative session, Equality NC is encouraging you to make your anti-amendment voices heard at the Faith Community Rally Against Homophobia & Transphobia in Charlotte, on June 24. During the last days of the regular legislative session, we'll be marching and rallying with faith leaders as well as secular friends as we show our true numbers and support for Equality!
In the meantime, join the 1,500 people who have already signed the Standing on the Side of Love petition to business leaders in North Carolina, urging them to reject anti-gay bigotry. The petition, crafted in partnership with Equality NC, urges companies to stake out a strong position against the proposed anti-LGBT constitutional amendment now circulating the North Carolina Legislature.
Because Equality is our business. And yours.
For Equality,
Jen Jones
Your Sisterfriend and Communications Director
