Last line of defense

beachcloseds709.jpgIf Senate Bill 709 becomes law, North Carolina’s beautiful beaches and coastline could be at greater risk of oil spills from offshore drilling. In addition, S709 would also promote a controversial onshore drilling method known as hydrofracking, a practice that has been known to ruin wells and poison groundwater in other states.

Unfortunately, the state Senate overturned the Governor’s recent veto of S709. Now, the state House stands as our last line of defense to stop this bill. Can you email your Representative and tell them to uphold the Governor’s veto of S709?

While the legislative majority claims this bill spurs job creation (even naming it the "Energy Jobs Act") a recent editorial in The Daily Reflector said it best:

North Carolina, and especially residents of the East, should hope that members hold the line. The state should do more to put its residents back to work, but it need not irreparably compromise one of its most pristine natural environments in order to do so."1

This bill would be a step backwards towards a dirty energy economy, just when North Carolina has become a regional leader in promoting clean energy jobs.

Tell your Representative to stand up for North Carolina’s natural coastline and drinking water by opposing S709.
