Who is and isn’t running for re-election

As of this date, there are two statewide open seat races. There are three
open seat congressional districts (9th, 11th, 13th District) due to redistricting and
Rep. Brad Miller’s (D), Rep. Heath Shuler’s (D), and Rep. Sue Myrick’s (R) decision
not to seek another term. In the N.C. Senate there are 10 open seat races, six due to redistricting, three due to retirements, one because the incumbent is running for
higher office; three members of the N.C. Senate were not elected to their seat, they
were appointed due to their predecessor’s resignation. In the N.C. House, there are
31 open seats, 14 due to redistricting, 17 due to retirements or members running
for another office; four members of the N.C. House were not elected to their seat,
they were appointed due to their predecessor’s resignation. Note that because of
redistricting, some members of the General Assembly may be retiring or running for another office but that doesn’t result in an open seat due to the fact that they were drawn into the same district with another member.
