Washington State Attorney General and Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob McKenna was speaking to a group of fellow Republicans Wednesday night when he spotted a man with a camera.
He stopped speaking to confront the videographer.
“Hi, who are you?” McKenna asked. “Who are you with?”
Zach Wurtz told him he was with the Washington State Democrats.
McKenna told him he had not given him permission to record.
Wurtz reminded him that he was a public official speaking in a public venue at an event that was open to the public.
That seemed to cause all kinds of confusion for the Young Republicans inside the North Bellevue Community Center, who tried to block his camera, then finally called the cops
Wurtz said it was a public place, that he’d seen the event advertised online, that he checked with the building’s rules, and that McKenna was a public figure. He stoically remained seated in the front row with his camera up. “I’m just here to listen to what the attorney general has to say.”
Wow, a young Republican whom can’t function in front of a Democrat’s camera, or was it that he knew he could bash, blame or scape coat his party’s failures on others?
So is the new way for public officials to act in public, by denying those that don’t agree with their ideology, better yet way to keep their racist, rude, inappropriate language, about the people they serve from ending up on YouTube.
Surmising that Wurtz was not going to leave, one member left the room to call Bellevue's finest. Wurtz not posing any immediate physical threat to anyone and the police having, I imagine, more pressing things to do they didn't arrive for quite a while. During that time, while Wurtz continued to roll tape, McKenna left the room and the YR president made announcements about upcoming events. Unfortunately, because of Wurtz's refusal to comply with the YRs' demand to leave and the YRs' refusal to continue the meeting despite his presence, the Attorney General never retook the stage.
Ever since 9-11 photography and Videography has coming under attack not only here in the US, but also in England, and a few other counties as well.
Just to find out read about it on Photography isn’t Crime Site, view videos on YouTube. If you are still think this is a non-issue, then that a professional type 35mm Digital Camera in SF, Washington DC, New York City and try to photograph Federal Building, trains, power substations, and subways, to see if you get harassed or question why you doing it, and hear them tell you that you are breaking the law. Don’t forget to get the law code if you can, most the time they can’t tell you one. You will heard, “well since 9/11.”
Photography is covered under the 1st Amendment of the US, there are many case laws on the subject as well.
Photography tends to be protected by the law through copyright and moral rights. Photography tends to be restricted by the law through miscellaneous criminal offences. Publishing certain photographs can be restricted by privacy law. Photography of certain subject matter can be generally restricted in the interests of public morality and the protection of children.
Now in London where there so many CCTV camera, photography is almost criminal, Period.. Yes in many cities if you are filming a movie, yes you do need a permit, shooting a fashion on location, you need a permit, but if you search you will find that tourist to London are harass for taking photographs of their vacations.
Photography of certain subject matter is restricted in the United Kingdom. In particular, the Protection of Children Act 1978 restricts making or possessing pornography of under-18s, or what looks like pornography of under-18s.
It is an offence under the Counter-Terrorism Act 2008 to publish or communicate a photograph of a constable (not including PCSOs), a member of the armed forces, or a member of the security services, which is of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism. There is a defense of acting with a reasonable excuse, however the onus of proof is on the defense, under section 58A of the Terrorism Act 2000. A PCSO cited Section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000 to prevent a member of the public photographing them. Section 44 actually concerns stop and search powers.
Following a prolonged campaign, including a series of demonstrations by photographers abused by Police Officers and PCSOs, the Metropolitan Police was forced to issue updated legal advice which now confirms that 'Members of the public and the media do not need a permit to film or photograph in public places and police have no power to stop them filming or photographing incidents or police personnel' and that 'The power to stop and search someone under Section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000 no longer exists.
Yes even their own reporters, and news media was harass why on location covering, accidents, fires, and other public crimes.
Now in the US, It is generally legal to photograph or videotape anything and anyone on any public property, with some exceptions made for certain portions of military installations that have national security sensitivity.
Photographing or videotaping a tourist attraction, whether publicly or privately owned, is generally considered legal, unless explicitly prohibited by posted signs.
There are cases where parents where arrested for take photos, video of their sporting events, but other parents accusing them of child pornography, Yes, hard to believe isn’t it. There are many case here in the US of our news media people getting harass or arrest for doing there jobs.
Lets not forget how TSA harass people for filming their actions.. Many cops use wiretapping laws to arrest photographers, and Videographers.. Yes, cops don’t like camera too. Once it was your word against theirs, and we all know the court will believe them over you any day of the week, but since camera are smaller and lighter and in every cell these day, that is rapidly changing isn’t it. There are been many cops caught lie in court because of these camera.. Remember the BART Police Shooting Of Oscar Grant Case,,
I only face this twice in my life, once at a public marriage rally in 2009 when I caught two young girls who was at the NC4Marriage, Kissing each other, the other was a by a rent a cop in Wilson after a Major storm tore it way through Wilson. The one in Wilson is the only person I rightly told off..
